I'm thinking of making 1 of my full cork rods into a split grip. How hard is it to remove the cork, and make the blank all nice and shiny.? Also what materials do I need to dress up the blank..?

TIA.. Cool

It will take some work to get it back down to the blank. Are you buying a split rod seat kit, should have all that you need to put it back together.

Shot me a picture of the handle maybe there is a different way to do it simpler.

Will do, although it's a standard cork handle on a Shimano Clarus.

Shouldn't be too hard utilizing the existing cork.
Probably can razor blade and peel most of the cork rings off being careful not to cut into the blank. Finish sand on a rod wrapping machine.
One thing I can say about the Clarus rods. They may be painted and if you sand it, it might end up another color Shocked
I believe that the best way to refinish a blank is to use a one part urethane finish.
There's a lot of info on this site if you use the search

Do you like the split grip?
I'm kind of convinced that the rod manufactures are pushing them because it saves them money because it uses less of the dwindling Portuguese cork supply

Well, I was thinking of cutting the cork back, then putting a clear coat on the blank. And yes I like the split grips, I have other rods with them. Thanks for the link.

I'm guessing there's going to be an adhesive that you're going to have to sand off

Hmmm, I wonder if it worth it. Maybe I should just buy a new rod..that's all I need, I don't have room for the ones I have now..lol

If you modify that Clarus, you will be voiding the lifetime warranty

life time warranty? is it only on that model? I took gilbert`s shimano crucial cu-60MLA 6`0" cuz it broke in the middle and they told me it has one year warranty.

As far as I know, lifetime warranty on Clarus on up and a Crucial is higher up in the rod line.
Did Shimano tell you this?

As far as I know, Clarus on up have Lifetime warranties. I broke a Clarus 1 1/2 yrs ago, my fault I broke the tip off, and told the guys at Long Fin. He said go grab another rod, as they have a lifetime, then over the counter exchange/ warranty.

A Crucial also has the lifetime, someone just didn't want to replace it, unless it's BPS, they have a 1 yr. over the counter exchange, after that you have to go to Shimano.

A Shimano tech told you that..? Maybe they changed the warranty this year then..? I'd still call them to get confirmation on that.
