Traveling to fish is great, but there are tremendous opportunities year round right out our backdoor! Sight fishing for local corbina in the shallows of our local beaches is just as challenging as stalking bonefish in the Keys. Casting into a school of yellowfin croaker or hooking a large halibut, and even the opportunity to land a world record giant white sea bass are all possibilities if you put in the time. Jim Solomon and Al Quattrocchi have decades of surf fly fishing experience. Don't miss this opportunity! Jim, Al and Jeff Priest will be in-store tying flies throughout the day.
Jim Solomon is a FFF Master Certified Instructor and has been a Trout Unlimited “Trout in the Classroom” instructor for 17 years. Jim has been fresh and saltwater fly fishing for 26 years. Basically, Jim will fish for anything that moves in water.
Jim’s favorite fish – corbina in the flats, yellowfin croaker in the rips, and sipping spring creek trout at Hot Creek Ranch. Other favorites – calico bass and bonito in the inshore.
Why surf fishing? Jim loves to fish. Period. After spending years traveling for fish, he discovered that there are tremendous opportunities year round at our backdoor. Sight fishing for local corbina in the shallows of our local beaches is just as challenging as bonefish in the Keys. Casting into a school of yellowfin croaker or hooking a large halibut, and even the opportunity to land a world record giant white sea bass are all possibilities if you put in the time.
Al Quattrocchi (aka Al Q) was born in Brooklyn, New York where he developed his love for saltwater fishing early in his childhood while living in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn. After moving to California in the late seventies to attend college, he was later inspired to switch to the fly rod and flyfish the surf after years of reading articles and learning from his mentors; Lefty Kreh, Lou Tabory, Bob Popovics and Nick Curcione.
Al’s articles and saltwater fly patterns have been published in Flyfishing in Saltwater, Fly Tyer and Saltwater Flyfishing magazines. He currently has two fly patterns in Umpqua’s Surf Fly Series. The “Qs Beach Bug” along with the “Corbina Candy” are two of the best selling surf flies in Umpqua’s Surf Fly Series. As a master fly tier, Al is currently on the Umpqua, Mustad and Tuffleye prostaffs.
Al Q hopes to bring more young people into the sport of saltwater fly fishing through the “One Surf Fly” which is a fun beach gathering he has created. The OSF brings the saltwater fly fishing community together by supporting local fly shops and non-profit organizations that in turn nourish our local fisheries. Fly Fishing the San Diego Bay - After catching his first trout on a fly at age 13, it was clear that the fish wasn’t the only one who’d been hooked! Kim spent the rest of his teenage summers studying Catskill fly-fishing under the tutelage of the likes of Ernest Schweibert, Joe Brooks, Harry Darbee, and others who generously shared their knowledge and love of the sport with him. When not engaged fishing the up-state trout streams, Kim found the bluefish and striped bass in New York saltwater more than willing to test a battered Cortland fiberglass 8-weight, helping pioneer saltwater fly-fishing on Long Island, still in it’s infancy.
College brought him to the Rocky Mountains and waters beyond to the west by 1972, and Air Force assignments later on, to fishing destinations even further away. Armed with a wealth of experience and knowledge from fly-fishing around the world, Kim now resides in San Clemente, California, where he continues to learn about the finer points of our sport, while sharing his enthusiasm and that “know-how” with others.
Fly Fishing the Local Freshwaters - Mark grew up in Michigan, and learned to fish on the Great Lakes, and rivers and streams in the area with his grandfather. His father taught him to fish the small streams around Greenfield, Massachusetts. He was introduced to fly fishing by his High Sierra hiking pal Tim Poole in the Donner Pass area. After several fits and starts, he gave up the spoons (throwing heavy metal) in 1999. He has been fly fishing the local mountains and the Sierra Nevada range for the past 11 years.
More to come.....
