Some of you guys asked me to post a pic of some of the snappers around here. I mentioned I was concerned about some nipping my fins. Imagine swimming with this guy. My buddy found it while mtn biking near a lake where I used to work.

That is one beautiful creature of nature. I would estimate it to
be between 80 and 120 years old. You have to respect a critter that
survives in the wild that long, and it says a lot for the eco-system
it lives in. We are doing something right, in some remote and even
not so remote areas when you see creatures such as this. Awesome
picture, thanks for posting it.

They are pretty much in any good size pond. You usually never see them this size. The lake this guy came out of is private and basically a watershed. I have seen big bass come out of there as well. I'm not sure how the fish and this turtle get so big, the water is always muddy and brown. I imagine it would be hard to see. The predators must depend on sound and movement I think.

There's another lake near this one where the catfish act like bass. They hit spinner baits and other lures. I was told by a friend that if they are the dominant species in a lake they will take over the basses place in the food chain. Not sure if that is true but it kind of makes sense.

My bad..I was thinking of the snappers I used to see in Louisianna (Alligator Snappers) They
can live up to 200 years in the wild. This
appears to be a Common Snapper and they usually
only live 30-50 years in the wild. I hate giving
out bad information when all a person has to do
these days is Google something. Sorry about that
guys. study Red Smile

My dad told me when he was young living in Oklahoma the adults used to warn kids about getting bit by snapping turtles while wading and they would sometimes catch fish with chunks bitten out of them.
