Hey Guys, pretty chuffed and excited about my new rod that Wiseguy built for me. Thanks again Jimmy can't wait for it to arrive and slay a few trout with it.

Built as a spinning rod on a 9ft 4 piece #8 fly blank.
Cobalt blue fittings and Zircon runners, with dragon scale and olive wreath binding.

Beautiful work!
just a question or two,...
what is the rods' final weight?
how did you determine the reel seats' position and handle length?
and what is your guess at the line, speed and action rating?

I used to have a couple of fly blank spinning rods when I was wrapping and was never sure about these points, I am thinking of making a three rod toobing and/or tooning set for the pay - to - play lakes around here, just trying to get some info before I choose my blanks.

Hey Bodfish, I can answer some of the questions but Wiseguy would have to finish it off as I haven't received the rod yet.
I chose the blank as it was described as a medium fast action, whether the runners have affected this I do not know.
10lb line was the targeted strength. The #8 blank was chosen after doing a search of the internet and using various formulae, a #8 blank would handle a 1/2 oz lure.
Finally I had to settle on a 4 piece rod to keep the final length under 36 inches otherwise postage to Oz would have been prohibitative.
I think though that I would have chosen a 4 piece anyway as it can be packed away easily for travel.
I have a #6 fly rod and like the action it has so if the #8 is slightly stiffer it should cast a 1/2oz lure well.
From the pics Wiseguy sent me, I know he has done an outstanding job on this rod for me and i look forward eagerly to its arrival.

I think Wiseguy should change his name to....
The Rod Sensei. Translation for those of you that don't know, The Rod Master. Cool

Hey Mike, first off, I'm glad you like the rod in the pictures and I hope you like it when you get it! I shipped it on Saturday to you.

To answer bodfish's question, didnt get a final weight on the rod but it felt pretty darn light to me. I did put on a reel and ran line thru the gides and tied a 1/2 oz weight and the rod felt great (didnt cast it though).

The reel seats position I usually determine it by feel. On what feels about right and since it has a rounded fighting but I took that into consideration, didnt want too much of a split grip but not too little either, it's funny how a little 1/4" can make all the difference in feel. I hope it feels right to Mike when he receives it. salute The other questions Mike has answered for you. I can say this though, I build me a spinning two piece on a fly blank with a 12 wt and I use it for surf fishing and it's awswome! Twisted Evil

Just an update on the rod guys, had to go to Melbourne and on my return found the rod delivered the same day about a week ago, expertly packed and undamaged.
If you order a rod from Jimmy guys and your worried about it being sent by post, don't be,as it was just about bomb proof considering the lightness of the blank.
Couldn't wait for my next trout foray away so took it down the local river in search of a few Bream.
The rod is light and I teamed it on this occasion with an Abu Garcia Diablo D35 spinning reel, the grips spacings were spot on Jimmy.
I used a .6 oz weight and it cast easily with no feeling of heaviness at the rod tip at all, so I think the #8 blank would handle a slightly heavier weight without too much drama .
Casting distance with this weight without trying was about 50 feet, if i had loaded the rod probably would get 75ft out of it.
No fish caught and no bites, so no pics yet Jimmy.
In all a pleasant morning spent sitting in the sun watching everyone go to work.
Checked out a few places on my way back home from Melbourne but didn't get to wet a line as it was raining heavily with thunder and lightning most of the way.

Well nice day and at a loose end decided to go down the local river, its not deep in places gets to about a foot in depth sometimes and the bream breed in the upper reaches of it. At the moment it is closed season in the upper part of the river for bream.
Any way blooded the rod, first up was a 34 cm beauty, caught four in all, around 30cm.
The rod was excellent, I could feel every head shake and even the smallest bite registered at the tip, I reckon I could tell in the end, if a fish even looked at the bait.
A few pics attached.
A perfect morning sitting in the sun.
