Has the group ever tried arranging an outing at SARL for freshwater stuff?

See some activity now and again but curious if there is any interest.

Don't think we have ever done an SARL Gathering. Let's see what others have to say on the subject.

Just as an FYI based on my perhaps ignorant assumptions.

I have never seen more float tubers in a single area than at SARL. Great opportunity to promote the forum and sport.

The reason I ask is that it seems the bite is off in the harbors for now, thought I would go get skunked and pay for it on my next outing. You know, cause not smart and all. Oh and I want to make bait for them trout things also...

Is the entrance/admission fee really $29 to fish there?

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

I don't think I could ever bring myself to do that when there are so many options around us (not necessarily all float tubing but still). If float tubing the freshwater, I'd rather drive a little further for somewhere that they don't charge or nearly as much.

BTW: I'm currently up in NorCal right now and there are certainly a number of options but mostly freshwater.

The $29 is always been my beef as well, although the lake is well stocked most often. I think your chances of catching are better here than in any none paid lake. But then again if you know what you are doing any lake will work just fine.

I think his real point is the number of Float tube fishermen that are on the water. This is a good place for the forum members to be and recruit new members.

So I get it. I've been skunked so many times here and it burns.

$29 is the entrance fee but if you want to use your float tube it is another $5 so $33 total.

As I know it, they stock the most of anyplace around.

Very true - if you are able to get on the water too the better off you are and the higher the chances that you can make the most of it.

It would be a good place to recruit all the shore fishermen as we float by with double hookups in front of them LOL!

Jess Ranch was a blast we rented out the lake for about $40 to $45 each max of 10 tubers. The lake was ours for the day. It was small and nothing exciting to look at but, it went off and we all caught large numbers of fish.

I also really enjoy Santa Fe Res. I would like to hold another gathering there soon plus it only cost about $10 to $12. And puddingstone if can be worth it as well.

Yea, I mean it looks like you're paying a premium for their stocked fish (many of which are probably pretty large) as well as the variety of fish there. I think the entrance fee is the same or similar to what it was when Irvine lake was still open... such a shame they couldn't sort out the operations to keep that place above water. I'd definitely love to float tube fish that place as the location and setting are really nice.

Have you been catching your limits on trout there?

I only started to go back when Catfish were running. Went about 6 times skunked 4, 2 on the tube.

Went another time for trout about a month and a half ago on shore and caught only 1. To be fair though the water temp was far too warm and most of the fish were dying after a few days after stocking

Even though its stocked still takes some knowledge of the fishery to make it work best. As a kid there were days it went off and days that were tough. Most often I would catch there but never a given you would catch. This is what make the enty fee so tough. I might be more willing to pay if there was something to see while i was there. Its just 3 big holes in the ground.

Yea I figure if you know how to target them and know to change tactics to adjust so that you catch, no problem. I'd probably want to hone that skill elsewhere first then try fishing there. From what I hear though, there's a lot of success trolling for trout in larger bodies of water. I don't know how effective that tactic is on the float tube though as guys who are trolling are usually in a kayak or boat (or have a trolling motor attached to either or a pontoon).

One of our members has that place (SARL) dialed in. Chris was his name, but I forgot his handle. But I too agree that the cost is steep.

At jess ranch, they have a policy of no one leaves without a fish (they take you to a pool to get your one keeper fish if you choose to admit your defeat).

CHRIS THE FISH SLAYER!!
Look him up here or on his YouTube. Definitely cleans up at SARL .

Truthfuly , it just depends on your location and timelines. My uncle from Lakewood loved chasing trout at Bridgeport and thereabouts. If he had 6 hours free on Sunday morning what were his choices? Drive two hours each way to Big Bear or Arrowhead, and fish for one hour or so, or hit up SARL?

Gas money or Pay and Play
