Hey all,
Its been years since I've heard anything about this little lake. Back in the late 90's when I lived in the canyon I used to float tube this lake once or twice a week. A small purple hand tied wooly bugger was the ticket.

Up until a few minutes ago I thought the lake was dead (I read the DFG stocked it this week) Anybody know what's going on up there? Is the campground open again? Nice spot to camp just a bad vibe always ringed throughout the place.

It's a lake at the top of Azusa canyon if I'm not mistaken. I have heard that it is a low life haven and that it is not worth fishing on account of the atmosphere there. I heard it used to be really nice however

I just did a little reading. It looks like the place was reopend this past March. It has been years since I've read of any fish being stocked. Its a great lake to tube, but more then 4 tubes makes it a full house and you have to stay pretty much down the middle if there are shore fisherman.

Monster is right, it was a pretty bad place back in the day, but now that there is a contracted concession, things will be ok. It was a nice place back in the late 60's and early 70's as well in the late 90's all due to the concession. When the forest service ran the show things were not so good.

I might head up there today and check things out.

I grew up in the SGV and Crystal Lake was a good place in the 70's. Let us know how it is now. Thanks

Okay, just got back, I forgot about the summer weeds Smile

The lake was clean, the parking lot was clean and so were the restrooms. The campground is now 1/2 the size it used to be, I'm guessing 80 sites, down from 175. The store\cafe is now open.

Here's the lake

Here's a good size doe I saw at the lake

This is where the west and the north forks of the SG river flow into the SG res.

Would you have called the DFG on this. When I took the picture I didn't see the guy sitting down. When I came back down the hill a few hours later I still only saw the one guy standing. FWIW, the two polls on the left our wet, I saw the guy standing cast both of them.

Anyways, this is where the east fork of the SG river flows into the SG res.

I did see a lot of LM bass in the 1-3 pound range crusing the shore line. It was hot so if the DFG had stocked you can bet all the bows were in the deeper middle part of the lake. I couldn't believe how much water was coming down the north fork in Sept..

Nice. I think I could nt have there for the weekend instead of lake isabella. Don't get me wrong it a beautiful place but the 4 hour drive compare to 1 hour is tempting but I really never fished here and the family like it so its a good

bodfish, its been closed for many reason, fire, bad management and lack of management seem to be the biggest reasons. I guess before 1900 it was a very dangerous place.

IMO, when hwy 39 past Crystal lake washed out in 1978 its was a done deal. They (Cal Trans) give all kinds of BS reasons not to open it but the road is there, they just wont improve it enough.

Lots of info here
