As a top water bait. I'm sure our more seasoned veterans have already long made this discovery. However, I just made it last night.

For those that do not know:

4" Ika T-rigged on 3/0 hook. Cast out and instead of letting a full drop only give it a second at most and then 2-3 fast cranks and an occasional pop like you would a popper bait or a jerk bait. The Ika will "hop" out of the water just an inch or so (depending on your technique). You can pause and let it drop and repeat. My impression is that of bait fish the way they will "hop" on the surface at dusk or early morning. No, I did not catch anything. I only fished like this for maybe 20 minutes. But I thought it was neat discovery.

Is anyone else doing this or something similar?

Thanks for looking.

Now that is a good tip, have not tried it but, maybe I will have to give it a shot one day.

If you Texas rig an Ika backwards with the eye of the hook at the skirt you can reel as soon as it hits the water and swim it right under the surface. Takes a few times to get it but if you reel at the right speed it will bulge right under the surface an make a tight wiggle. Have had plenty largemouth come up from the depths for it lots of times following till shore and smacking it right in front of me

short dense bait with tentacles. Looks like a
short chubby squid. Casts a mile flylined and
swims. My favorite plastic for bass hands
down. Made by Gary Yamamoto. Dunno how to
post pics otherwise i would.

Hey Guys,
Try this one for pitchin in tight. rig the Ika (Japanese for squid) backwards, or wacky !! Great for dock skipping ! Or pitching for prespawm males. Or nesting females fished off the nest in staging areas.

thats the one. watermelon is my favorite color
also great on braid pitched into brush or docks. swims away from you into structure when rigged ass first.
pricy but effective plastic. also for you bay
tubers its great for spotties rigged backwards
with a nail in the nose tossed at the jetties

I found that they work best fer bass when used to mimic a crawfish. I cast n let set on the bottom n slowly reel while twitchin every 30 sec or so. The slwoer the retreve the better. I use a 4" watermelon red n black flake riged withe a 4ot owner weighted swim bait hook gives it a nice natural lookin fall. With real fast twitches u can walk the bait on the bottom kickin up dust n rocks. Gets the bass goin crazy!
