I’ve fished with GT; and his DIY large paneled lights a few times, and they are super super bright and very effective. They illuminate and they work great!
I could always see him .... no matter where he was.
I go a slightly different route ...
I go as light-weight as possible and I don’t like to carry any extra wires, cables, mounts, ABS or PVC pipe, hardware and or heavy batteries.
At night I use:
The “Legend” dog-walking lights on Amazon; that are water resistant, they twist to turn on and off and they are (DIY) Velcro mounted so they can be turned off and removed when not being used and easily stowed away in a ziplock snack bag.

Still light weight. And when I don’t need it, I stow it away.
I simply illuminated it when a boat is approaching or I need a brighter light in order to feed my line back through my rod’s eyes or I need to tie a knot or to undo a knot or to do surgery on a fish.

Have fun and please post up pictures of how you did your DIY US CG Safety lighting or pic’s of your end product, if you would.
