my 8 yr old son finally did it lol

my 8 yr old managed to lose his rod in 25 ft of water at isabella lake while crappie fishing

 he was upset because he thought i would be mad at him so he hung his head and said what now dad and kept saying sorry dad   poor guy i felt bad for him just because he was so upset

i told him don t worry about it buddy ($5 eagle claw featherlite with $15 shakespeare reel)

take my rod and get over near your g pa and continue fishing  i will go back and get my spare rod out of the car 

he was taking a crappie off his jig and when he went to pull his mesh bag out of the water to put the fish in it he forgot to strap his rod down on his tube and it went overboard

good news is he cought about 15 crappie landed and strung them all on his own

he is becomming a self sufficient tuber at 8 yrs old   pretty tough to get upset with him over $20 worth  of gear lol

Hey, it happens.. He caught 13 more fish than I ever did in one day.. He's doin good...

good for him.. Pretty impressive for an eight yr old!

that is cool and may i say good job dad you tought your how important he is over some fishing gear

     You handled it well mister, Things happen. I am sure your son learned a good lesson, not just about tackle management but about you, and what is really important about our sport.

     PS. after reading your post I sat back and tried to figure out how much tackle of my own I have watched sink into the deep, and I was alarmed at the expense!! I guesstimate at least a couple grand!!!  Yeeeesh!

Thanks for the report!  It's nice to hear someone that "gets it".

I witnessed just the opposite yesterday.  My son and his buddy were fishing on a pier in the bay yesterday and asked me to come over after work to fish for a bit and then give them a ride home.
About an hour after I got there, an older guy comes walking down the pier with a pizza over his shoulder and starts yelling at a kid (ends up being his grandson).  He was yelling and cussing so loud that I thought they were friends and he was just joking.  Apparently, he had left to get pizza and told the grandson to watch his poles (he left them baited, casted, and sitting against the rail).  My son told me that the guy custom makes all of his rods (I understand how he might be upset).  So, the grandson got distracted while fishing and talking to other people on the pier and wasn't standing by his grandpa's rods when he came back.  He completely belittled the kid in front of 20+ people.  I felt pretty bad for the kid...
