I'm going to upload some photos of the kids fishing at Legg Lake in September of 2013. They caught a pretty good size what I would call blue gill or Sun fish but it was a little bigger than what I have seen in the past.

Uploaded file is not valid: exceeded attachment maxsize (0 kB).

So I guess no pics.

I have uploaded lots of attachments here. I have the file size down to next to nothing. Why is it telling me I can't post anything more than zero?

My first reaction is hybrid.

Likeliest suspects:
Green x gill
Red ear x gill
Red ear x green

The mottling suggests red ear. Was there ANY HINT of an opercular rim, a band around the rear of the ear tab. Even a clear one is a safe sign of red ear in the mix.
I'm guessing red ear x gill, simply because those are both common out west. Greenies aren't as widely disbursed.

Its a guess for me, though. I'm bad at "Guess This Fish."

Good for the girls! Thumbs Up

It looks like a Bluegill to me, just very long from what I'm used to.

Redear. Although, it doesn't have a "red ear" it's still a redear. The vertical bars is what gives the fish away.

Cool, that whole red thing is what was throwing off. I popped open the original pic in Photoshop and went to color correct it but there was no color there at all. Even being a bad photo there was nothing to work with, only the gold on the belly and brown spots.

It's also very likely a female due to the yellow collar.

OK, I found this pic of a Redear next to a Bluegill
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

I think I will re-evaluate and call it a Redear
