I know this is a float tube forum; but my buddy and I want to try some surf fishing. I live in Irvine. I am looking for some guidance on where to go and how to fish the surf.

Thanks

I been wanting to try this too. But from what I've seen it always seems like guys are using heavy line with like an 8ft pole?

Those 8ft poles are for guys trying to get passed the second or third waves to try and get sharks and stingrays etc... When I surf fish if like to use a 6'6" rod with 6lb test depending on how ruff the waves are I'll use a 1/2 oz sliding sinker Carolina rigged on a # 4 mosquito hooks with either some 2" grubs , Berkeley camo worms , live lug worm, live ghost shrimp, soft shell sand crabs . You want to cast out just passed the first wave and work your line slowly , also you want to look for pockets , holes or sandbars by scanning the beach.

Hope this helps.

I surf fish too. Some guys here surf fish as well. I would say surf fish Newport beach or Bolsa Chica. I hate to refer to other forums, but check out the one above as it is almost 100% surf fishing. You will find some good stuff there as to locations and tips for surf fishing. Of course you're welcome here too. I fish the surf, rocks, boats, and float tubes and I post in this site often. The guys here are just AWESOME!

If you don't want to lose those $20 lucky crafts you can use heavy line on it. I use a bait caster with 30lb or 50lb braid or I tie a 3' 20lb-30lb leader. You can use a light rod and drag so you don't rip the lc out of their mouths. If/when you get stuck you can pull the line with your hand and save your lure.

Is there a place to park to avoid the $15 entrance fee?

Thank You for all the tips. I had a great time fishing the surf in the morning and evening of July 5th. Caught lots of small surf perch, 1 croaker, and 1 Corbina.
