Can you share any tactics on fishing the kelp assassins? Are most of your hookups on the sink? or working the bottom?

fishin' fatty wrote:Very well put together. thanks for sharing the history behind your passion. with the razorback, what size hook weedless hook would you recommend? also with the kelp sassin available in the sizes, do you use the same skirt and grub size for all of them? I imagine the three diffient sizes are just for rate of fall? Thank you in advance!

Thanks for the good words. The Razorbacks fish well in the 3/8 oz model Sassin. I also fish them on a "pea" head in 1/4 oz or 3/8 oz for good results. If you were to fish then weedless I'd go no bigger than 4/0. As far as the rate of fall goes for the different sizes, YES, but the skirt size is the same for all the jigs, just trimmed down a bit. The grub can be replaced with your favorite swimbait. Great question.

They eat it on the drop mostly. If it makes it to the bottom, a couple high rod jerks and a med retrieve back for the next pot hole.

I have never used skirts on saltwater swimbaits in the past but recently got on some fish with a kelp' sassin. Is this just something I have overlooked ? And will freshwater jigs work in inshore fisheries

Absolutely, but be careful when purchasing fresh water baits for the salt, they fall apart fast.

If you had to fish one color what color would you go to.
Bolts? White/chartreuse
Persuaders? Limeade
Sassins? That's tough. Probably a new color I have coming out called Camo

Still have some e-mailed questions coming in.

I noticed that your grub mold has REEBS on the tail but they use to have the three holes. I like the holes can you still make those.

The holes were always used on the Razerbacks, my grubs molds never had holes. I like them too Jeff. I put them in the tail to 1) loosen the action of the tail 2) hold scent longer. Like hot pockets, but "scent pockets" lol

That certainly is the big question. Here's my take of it. There have been many days when I've been outfished by my own baits. I'm using one color, my buddy another. He's roping bass one after another, and I'm getting short bit. WTF? I switch over to his color way and still HELMET for me. WTF? I truly believe CONFIDENCE is [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] in lure selection.

Mike,
Love fishing your persuader swim baits, best swim baits I've fished in my opinion, a slightly faster than medium retrieve has produced good results for me. I'm curious to know how you fish them in local so cal waters and what colors you prefer in these winter months.

I agree confidence is a big part of your lure and color choice.

Is there a depth range you prefer or recommend for the Bolt Throwers?

As you know, It's way easier in Cedros, but here locally, I fish them fast, burning them over open pockets and alley ways. I REALLY like fishing them in skinny water just off the beach like you would a surface iron.

Me to I have all kinds of colors and when there is something new I want it. But when I am fishing I throw WHITE or a shade of GREEN. Those are my confidence colors, I just like to see the other colors LOL.

Good question, I usually fish them on the bottom. Slow and low, sometimes dead sticking them (no movement at all)

Salt Creek would be tough, but in La Jolla its a bit easier. Dana has good coastline too!
