Alright y'all, the trout opener at the Sierras is upon us. I would like to take some fly gear this year.
However, I have never fly fished the Sierras! Does anyone know the best flies to use. I ask bcuz I would like to tie my flies myself.
I need the practice.

TIA

I have fly fished all over CA and CO. I personally use a pretty small collection of flies. The Sierras are big what part are you going? Also are you lake fishing or are you stream fishing? These are my top flies for just general trout fishing. Size 18 prince nymph, size 18 Royal Wulf, Size 12 Stimulator, size 18 or 20 zebra midge, size 18 black beauty, size 18 or 16 parachute adams. I can pretty much catch any trout any were on that selection. Fly fishing is really just good presentation. Present your fly well as long as it is a good generally imitation you will get hooked up.

It's been years for me, but as an unskilled fly fisherman, I did best with wet flies in streams. Size 18 Parachute Adams or Wooly Worm would be my choices.

Good luck and let is know how it goes!

I'm probably gonna lake hop all over.
From Bishop and up. So like Rock Creek lake , McGee Creek, Convict lake and a few others I know the Olive wooly bugger works well. I just wanted a few others.
I've never fly fished Ca, but I have fly fished different parts of Montana, I didn't know if the same flies would work.
