Check this out ...
Van Staal says that when you go to break in the drag on your VS reel ...
you need to tie the tag-end of your line to your pickup truck's bumper,
then have your wife get inside and punch the gas pedal all the way down to the floor board for approx 200 feet while you hang on to your rod with the drag setting on your reel buttoned down all-the-way.
This should be repeat if necessary. lol
Just to prove a point ...
I have actually allowed my reel to roll around on the sandy surf's floor (in the skinny), then buried it completely in the sand, then dug it out and shook it ...
walked out into the surf, shook it and rinsed it off in the clean portion of the surf and then continued to fish a 6-hr session. Worked perfectly. No other reel can do this.
It did not affect the VS's performance in any way.
Oh ... and mine are both bail-less! They are reel cool!
