My name is Mike and I am 62 years old I’ve been flyfishing and tying flies since I was eight years old. I own a little conventional tackle but rarely does it leave the garage.

I grew up in Long Beach and then moved to the high Sierras till I was 22 at which point I left California and moved to Texas and that’s where I’ve been for the last 35 odd years. I just recently moved back out here don’t know diddly about saltwater fishing but I want to learn I am mostly a bass fisherman and bluegills and crappie  etc.

I’ve been in contact with Jeff here and he’s been very helpful I  I just purchased a maxxon 240...I have had float tubes in the past but just the old round donut ones and it’s been 30 years ago.

I have a lot of medical issues and I’m 100% disabled I can get around but it’s hard and I’m slow. Basically I have a couple years to live according to the doctors and I’m just looking to fish as much as I can until I die.

Looking forward to learning from you guys and sharing.
If anybody wants to hook up and get together and learn to fly fish or fly cast and I got plenty of  equipment to share.
If it has gills I’ll chase it with a flyrod.

I’m  about the post a question in the equipment section about fishfinders.

Edit: forgot to mention I live in El Cajon right now but I’m moving to Oceanside soon.

Welcome to the forum MikeWest.

There are plenty of freshwater Bluegill and bass in Southern California that will eat the fly. I hope to see some fishing reports from you soon.

Hey Mike - welcome and I'm a newbie here also. Seems like the place to be for saltwater, didn't know that was even a thang. Smile I've been in a donut boat for 40 years after bass as well here in Ohio. No need to go with oars and such fishing farm ponds, small lakes and quarries. Don't publicly advocate float tubing as I know from years of hunting that loose lips sink ships (spots) and I fish to get away from people not to attract them to my honey holes. People suck. lol

I'll be trying out a new Fishtrax1c in the tube this year, primarily to get a better grasp of quarry structure, drops offs etc. Will let you know how effective it is - not sure about it for Salt but for freshwater might be an advantage.

Good luck with your new boat, seems all kinds of gizmo's you can add these days!!

Welcome Mike and Hntfsh! Fishing from the tube in saltwater and freshwater is a real blast. I'm sure you'll both have a great time. If you are in El Cajon you may want to check out sdfish.com Mike. There are a lot of float tubers that fish in san diego in both the bays and many lakes. Good luck to both of you and hope you catch plenty of fish on your outings!

Hello Mike so good to see you on the forum posting up. As we talk on the Phone when you are out this way we will try and hook up maybe in Newport to wet a line. So sorry to hear about your medical condition but so good to hear you have plans to enjoy. We will be here for all your questions, and to help out where we can. Your fly fishing experience is amazing and I for one am looking forward to learning a little from you about fly fishing. Again welcome to the FTFF so glad you found us.

Thank you everyone for the welcomes

I think I’m gonna need a couch to sleep on for a while.

Today I clicked on the rest of the stuff to deck this boat out.
Got a Garman stryker 4 fishfinder.
The mount for it from fishfindermounts.com
A side bag for it from Bucks bags because mine didn’t come with any.
And a couple Scotty fly rod holders.

I decided to make my own battery packs for the fishfinder out of AA batteries So I’m YouTubing on how to do that videos but nobody ever mentions where you get the weirdo connectors for this stuff.

Anybody have a good DYI video on that?
How to make a eight pack AA battery pack and hook it to a Garman striker?

Edit: never mind figured it out sometimes I’m an idiot
