I've been throwing them recently. Just picked up a couple made by Hog Farmer. They have numerous sizes to chose from. The medium to larger sized rigs need heavier gear due to weight. I had a lot of success throwing a "micro" rig with 1/8 oz swim jig heads and 2.8 to 3" swimbaits. I throw this smaller rig on a 7' 5" Heavy Power casting rod and 200 series bait cast reel with no issue. I've been using 30-40lb braid main line with a 18-20lb fluorocarbon leader.
The micro rig I use has 5 wires. Top 2 have screw locks that I bend up 1 left and 1 right of center with deco baits. The bottom 3 wires, I bend the longer down and leave it center, 1 down left, and 1 down right. Those bottom 3 have the jig heads and swimbaits. I haven't had a fish bite the top deco baits, they usually hit the bottom center, and sometimes the bottom left or right.
I just got back from a trip to Santa Margarita Lake in CA, where the Umbrella (or A-Rig) was my top producer for better bass. I caught at least 6 in 2 days with this technique, all Largemouth fell between 2.5 and 4.5lb range. I did pretty well at Havasu Lake in AZ, catching a couple smallmouth and largemouth.
I haven't thrown it from the tube yet, but I will in the near future. Highly recommend using a net due to hook concern just like I do with all crankbait fish or any lure with a treble hook. Also, confirm local rules due to multi wire and hook style rig. Here in CA you are limited at 3, and AZ you are limited at 2. Other states I've heard you can use up to 5.
