Hello everyone, I'm curious to know what the specs of rods y'all use to throw your 3" Big Hammer type swim baits, and what size lead heads? I believe I'm using 1/4 oz. lead heads on a 7' MH, xf action Clarus Baitcasting rod and my accuracy is all over the place and my pitching is getting overruns. I'm thinking of getting a lighter rod.

You can try going down in length, I use 6 to 6 and 1/2 rods, of course my favorite rod is 8 foot and I do well with it. 1/4oz. is what I use but you can go up if you feel you need to 1/4oz. I feel it the lighter side of things. For action I like Medium action, of course this is just me I am sure you will get some other opinion in time.

I take (3) stix with me these days.

(2) Shimano Crucial's w/ 8lb line.
CRS-DX68MB
Length: 6'-8"  Line weight: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Lure Weight: 1/8 to 3/8oz
Power: medium  Action: extra fast
One for drop shot and one for Jika.
I use Shimano Stratic Ci4 2500F spinning reels on both of these.

And (1) St Croix Avid Inshore w/ 8lb line and I prefer using the Big Hammer 3/16 oz 2/0L hammer heads.
VIS70MLF
Length: 7'  Line weight: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Lure Weight: 1/8 to 1/2oz
Power: medium light Action:  fast
I throw 3" Big Hammers and I often "shoot-the-dock" with this one, and I can also throw 1/2oz spinner lures.
I use a Shimano Stratic Ci4 3000F spinning reel on this one.

I hope that you find my gear intel helpful to you,

Good luck!

I have several of the 3/16 lead heads also, but those are really tough to throw with my bait casters. I usually use a spinning setup for finesse rigs like drop shot and wacky rigs for freshwater bass and I use spinning gear for my surf setups. I could go that way if I have to, but I'm hoping to use my bait casting gear for swimbaits, jigs, and spinners. I'm considering something like these Major Craft rods that can cast a 3/16 lure:

Nice setups SP Dan. As a newbie, I've been following your posts and learning a lot from them.

I use a 7' lamiglas rock creek rated a "4 power" 3/8-1 1/4 lure...a short salmon/steelhead stick pretty much. It loads up real well to help fling the 3/8 heads out there, but still has a good backbone to pull the spotties out of the eelgrass. Mind you, when chucking swimbaits, don't go by the weight of only the head. The swimbait body adds to it, I believe i'm throwing closer to 1/2 than 3/8.
