Picked up a Maxxon xpw 240 from a fellow member here on the forum. (Thanks FloatIQ, Mo!).  It’s a great boat.  It’s a platform style float tube and the true definition of a hybrid.  It’s rather big and seems heavy to transport but on the water it’s agile and fast.  I’ve had it out a few times and really enjoy it.

I’ve been doing a few mods and I want to share.  I came up with an idea to use square pvc furniture tubing as a base / frame. I used stainless screws and fender washers to attach the frame to the tube through the grommets so it could be removed if I ever wanted to strip boat back to “Stock”.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

I then used some 6”x12”-  1/2” thick cutting boards as a top that I could screw accessories to.  I got some tackle bags from Decathlon (my daughter has a FLTB5 so I grabbed one of her bags as a sample). and screwed them into the pvc frame with stainless screws and fender washers.

Coincidentally, my brother recently (accidentally) broke the base of my strap on battery mount (from FishFinderMounts.com). for my fish finder so disassembled the base and screwed it into the cutting board. Then dropped battery in and reassembled it.   Then mounted the Garmin to it with a Ram mount.
Also mounted Scotty Mount rod holder near the fish finder facing forward.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

For the transducer I took apart the transom mount (this boat comes with a trolling motor mount)  and flipped it upside down and hooked transducer right to it.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

The last thing I did and the most expensive was I got a Scotty mount triple rod holder that faces backwards away from my casting zone.  There was one mount already on the tube when I got it so just use it for my net.  [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

So far this thing has been awesome.  I’m fine tuning these mods as I fish more and see where everything needs to be.  Next is working on a cart or a set of wheels like Jeffcpr uses.  I’ll need something that stands upright for where we launch at Alamitos Bay (through a narrow sidewalk). But most other places I have a flat kayak cart that might work but will need to rig up first.

Sorry such a long post.  I enjoyed the engineering part of doing these mods and hope to dial them for many comfortable hours on the water.

Dude that is killer. I am now thinking it's time to redo my Maxxon. My wheels are turning. Great work that just blow me away.

You are welcome!!  Great to pass this great tube to a fellow forum member!  You have made an incredible setup of it. Probably one of the best I've seen for the 240.  Well done! And i agree, it is pretty large but once on water, it is remarkably stable, agile, and fast. And it is less prone to wind pushing it around due to the low profile.

Super!!  Perhaps we'll get to fish together one of these days.

ps: And if you want a cutting edge motor, feel free to contact me and I'll swing you a killer deal on a new motor that's only 2+ lbs, and the whole battery/motor package is under 12+ lbs. (Not including the transom mount which is also relativel lightweight.)  I can do trolling speed for 8+ hours.  Nothing on the market is as light as this unit that I can find with this kind of runtime, and the battery is waterproof and floats.

Very nice and well thought out too! Someday I will have to look at a fully dropstitched hybrid! I bet it really moves nicely on top of the water too!

Thanks , Dan.   I really like your new tube as well.  I actually looked at that one and the float plus 1 like Jeff’s, then this deal came along.

Yes, the Maxxon is very agile on the water compared to how heavy it is on land.  And even though I sit up a little higher it does surprisingly well in the wind.  Where we go mostly in Huntington harbor and Alamitos Bay  I can cut across the channels fairly easily.  Some day I may consider a trolling motor setup to go against the ripping tides we run into sometimes but for now I’m good with just some planning on which beach I launch from based on wether tide is incoming or outgoing.

I’m not considering a motor any time soon but will definitely look at the Bixby when the time comes.

I agree we should hook up at Gregory for some trout this fall and winter.

Wow,

I love gadgets, diy, modifications, etc. What great ideas you came up with. There is nothing better for me than seeing the pictures and or videos along with the details of how you did it and what materials you used. How fun!

Thanks for sharing! I feel your excitement, lol. Take care, AJ

if we get together this weekend you'll get to see it in person and can take it for spin if you want. Last I looked on the website they had 2 blems available for about $700. That's a great deal but still a lot of money.
