Today I got up early and arrived at Otay Lake before sunrise.
As I was loading the float tube in the water, the crescent moon remained visible in the deep azure morning sky. The lake was full to the brim, and there was just the slightest bit of chop across the surface courtesy of a slight but brisk pre-dawn breeze. The water was stained nearly opaque from all recent rains, yet still, to my eyes it was lovely.
As I kicked my tube away from the bank, I heard, and subsequently saw some large fish breaching the surface and break dancing through a huge mat of tules that were laying bent over across the top of the lake.
Prior to making my first cast, I grabbed my phone, chose my playlist, picked randomize, and hit play. The first song that came up? Black Water by the Doobie Brothers. "Well I've built me a raft and she's ready for floatin"... It was the perfect start to a wonderful day.
Oh and I caught and carefully released 2 very chunky pre-spawn largemouths. The water temp was 62 degrees, but is, as previously mentioned, quite stained. There is a lot of debris floating on the surface from the rains. The level is so high it now completely covers most of the tules that surrounded the lake, and is nearly up to the parking lot. It makes fishing tough right now but bodes extremely well for the summer when the water settles down.
