Weather permitting (forecast looks great), I'm hoping to float a portion of the Rock River near Watertown on the weekend of June 11-12. Will be casting for northerns and drifting live bait to see what bites. Will report back later.

It's satisfying when scouting for new areas to fish and you actually catch a fish. I launched downriver from where I wanted to explore and rowed upstream for two hours. Probably covered about a mile of river. Rowing against the current and the wind meant I moved at about a granny's walk. Once I reached a railroad bridge, I decided to drift back while casting Little Cleo's for northerns. I lost two new lures to snags before I wised up about casting into problem areas. When I reached three new bridges just a couple hundred yards from my put-in/take-out spot, I anchored upstream of the bridge pilings and threw lures into likely spots - near the pilings. At the last piling, a fish flashed onto the lure just as it hit the water about six inches from the downstream side of the piling. Fish on! and crappie in net a few fighting seconds later. After a quick photo and release, I decided to end my half-day trip on that good note. The next time I try this drift, I'll be rigged for panfish and northerns.

A successful scouting trip. Now I know how to plan for the next outing:

So you learned your lesson about casting into those 'problem areas'? I wish I could do that. Seems like I can't resist them. Catching fish in those areas only compounds my problem area problem!

Nice report. It will be interesting to see a follow up report on a second trip.

I've got some scouting planned for the next three months myself.

Nice report! Keep 'em coming, I love the fish porn.

The old saying if your not losing gear your not casting close enough, not too bad if it's only a soft plastic and jighead here and there but it gets expensive quickly if you start losing quality crankbaits
