Solo session today Sat 11-3-2018.

I always like to take a few minutes before each session to calm my thoughts and to remember to give thanks; for being so BLESSED, for being able to be here on this day.

The bite started off great right from my launch site with a NS and it remained good for about an hour. After that it was onesies here and there for the next hour. The last hour dragged .... I wasn't even getting short bites .... NOTHING! I "white flagged" this session. There's always tomorrow ... eh!?  Thumbs Up I'm just tickled that I was able to land a few today!

Location: Los Angeles Harbor

Hi ya Jeff,

CORRECTION ... IT IS A CORBINA!
In comparing a Yellow-Fin Croaker (YFC) with all the other fish species in our area, I've always said that; pound per pound, the Croaker's have always been some of the best fighting fish that I've had the pleasure of landing! They run fast and they run hard!

This is my (NS) 1st White-Fin Croaker (WFC) and it was surprisingly larger and longer than the regular YFC's that I've caught in the past and it definitely lived up to it's family's reputation for putting up one-heck-of a good fight.

When I first saw it; as it raced across in front of me and it flashed it's silver w/ pinkish purple sides, I thought at first that it was a White Sea Bass because it ran and it pulled heavy along with pulling my rod tip down into the water. What a fighter!!

I definitely look forward to my next encounter with a WFC.
What a great surprise! Thank you Poseidon! Thumbs Up

Never heard of "White Fin Croaker" but that looks an awful lot like a corbina! Are you sure it's not a bean?

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

In either case, I agree that croakers are *great* fighters. Especially in the surf - I hooked up on a 5-6lb~ spotfin croaker. It was a lot of fun to land and easily my biggest fish from the surf on 4lb test. Beans are a lot of fun to catch from the surf too, especially when stalking them or trying to figure out where they're holding. You occasionally hear of them being caught in harbors but I think it's not as common. Even in the surf it can be tough. There's a reason why they're called "ghosts" Smile

On the Cabrillo Beach pier they have signs posted for not eating the white fin croakers, and it’s all the same water.
I have always caught my Corbina in the surf and never inside of a Bay but I’m going to follow up your lead and investigate this further because I would never expect to catch a Corbina inside the Bay, that would be a new species for me in the Bay as well.

Thanks

Dan

Strange... I know there are "White Croaker" [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] which I know for sure you're not supposed to be eating in most if not all places. The pic of your catch doesn't really look like a "White Croaker" though (http://kenjonesfishing.com/2016/10/white-croaker/) - the pectoral fin shows to be that of a Corbina - [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] in addition to the barbel on the chin. White croaker don't have the barbel and also have an elongated pectoral fin. The coloration is also pretty unique on the Corbina - sort of a purple/pink/silver/grey combination in there...almost white seabass'ish

Is this the sign btw?

I never expected to catch a Corbina!
You are correct Sir!
I stand corrected ... thank you.
I knew that it wasn’t a yellow fin Croaker.

Well congrats on the bean! It's definitely a rarer catch in the harbors and on a HUB nonetheless! I usually only hear of beans eating sandcrabs, ghost shrimp and blood worms Smile If you ever hook up on a spotfin, which is definitely possible in the harbor, you'll be in for a ride. The thing about spotfin is that their primary forage is bivalves and crustaceans. You'd probably be the first to hook up on one on plastics however Smile

Spotfin is also on my Bay-Bucket list.
Corbina is now and forever ... checked-off my Bay-Bucket species list!
It must be at least 6-8 years since I had last landed a Corbina in the surf using a Lucky Craft 110 lure. WOW! Time really flys!!
I had forgotten all about the Corbina since I've been hunting the Bay Bass and the Bay Hali's.

jplee3 ... I really do appreciate you chiming in on the species I.D. Sir! Thumbs Up Please chime in any time! Thumbs Up

Thank you,

BUCKET LIST

I'll be heading up to Montana to do a lot of fishing from the end of May and into June 2019

Bucket list fish: Grayling, Pike, Muskie, Whitefish, Yellow Perch, Kokanee.
My good ol' friend lives up there and he will have all of our AO's lined up, for fishing from his boat to our fishing from our float tubes.
I told him that I wanted to go after the Pike and Muskie from the tube if possible. Very Happy
