My current set up, ML rod, 3000 series spinning reel, 8lb. test mono. I'm happy, I like light line and ML set up. I came back to saltwater inshore fishing from fly fishing....Backing,casting line, leader, tippet. I carried a bunch of line, tied a bunch of knots. I really like the simplicity of my set up. I tie a swimbait on my line, I fish. But I hear I wont be getting a few fish to the tube on my current set up. i'm liking the amount of fish I'm catching on 8lb and the challenge of catching them on 8lb. Maybe if the fish get bigger I'll increase mono test.....or switch to braided line. But I really dont want to start tying leader and dealing with it. 98% to 99% of fish I can catch with 8lb if i'm fishing well. Maybe if we head to the kelp or head off the beach for bigger halibut I'll need to switch to braid, but most of my fishing is inshore. was here to ask a question if i should switch to braid but after typing all this i think I'm fine with my style of fishing. Let me know your thought on this please.

You answered your own question already. You are very comfortable fishing your setup currently. If you are landing fish and not getting cut off, why should you change? I fished 10/12 lb mono a lot previously. I did well fishing flats and grass but once I moved to areas with hard structure, I had to go braid to heavy leader or else I’d need to retie much too often.

It all depends on how comfortable you are using light line and if you are okay with breaking off. I perfer light line, even fishing the docks and rocks in LAB. I do get snagged a lot and do break off. I have fished braid with 6-8 feet of leader but I tend to break off and end of fishing straight braid by the end of the trip. I have started using a longer top shot of mono or fluoro in the aread of 15-20 yards.

I have gone both ways, for bay fishing I like XXX copolymer mono. Currently I"m using 6 and 8 pound test, on bait casters. I fish mainly the flats, ell grass and the mud/sand bottoms. Some days I will lose 3-4 HUBS. I have started removing the last 12 inches of line after a break helps......but ya I prefer mono over braid in these conditions............GT
