After participating in a thread about fishing knives, I decided to spend some time at the workbench and come up with a possible solution.

GOAL: Make a knife sheath for my rod rack that is secure, durable, and practical.

DISCLAIMER: I used the cheapest filet knife I could find as this is a prototype and I was not sure how it would turn out.

I decided to go with a pvc lock form sheath. I got the idea from a holster that I have for my Beretta 9mm that uses the same technology so your gun doesn't fall out when moving. Did a search on YouTube and it turns out, I'm not the first person with this idea as there were many videos with useful info. Here are some sequenced pics of the build:

If you are wondering about the holding strength of the sheath as I was, check out this quick video I made.

Excellent work! I shy away from using any blade longer than 3" after a few incidents on the water. I'll have them handy just in case, but demoted myself down to 1" to 2" razor edge folding blades, which I can safely stow away after each use on my PFD pockets.

This is my favorite fishing knife, "The Canadian Belt Knife," from Cold Steel.

It is modeled after an older trappers knife once made by Camillus, which was very popular
with the Northern woodsmen back in the day. The original was carbon steel and razor sharp, but went out of production decades ago. Cold Steel brought it back some few years ago, to our benefit.
It is one sweet working knife.

- Delrin handle, with lanyard hole
- 4" stainless steel blade, VERY sharp.
- Unique, drop-point blade design.
- Thumb grip serrations on top of blade.

I got mine on ebay for $13, as I recall.

Now that's a freaking sweet knife. Looks perfect as a field shaving knife as well.

LEO - Now that's a freaking sweet knife. Looks perfect as a field shaving knife as well.

You can get that sort of edge on it, Leo. I use a ceramic rod to hone it razor fine. And for a stainless knife, it holds that edge pretty well. It's also a natural in the hand. I've used mine to completely process a deer... using no other knife, besides a bone saw.

You actually mastered razoring an edge with ceramic rod? I'm still using a 1500 grits honing block to bring the common stainless steel and alloys to their sharpest. Aside from that, my use my 1300grit belt sanding system to razor out metal. Both can give me the ultimate shaving experience with a hunter, chef or fileting knife. I got to hand it to you. Definitely a skill to master for the wild.

Hmmm. I didnt know it was anything special, Leo - Ive done it this way for a long time.
I have a triple stone that actually does the work of making the edge.
The ceramic rod is just used to strop the final touches. It is about 3/4 in diameter and came from a boiler. It was originally about 2 feet long.

You can also use the bottom of a large coffee mug or other suitably sized, fired ceramic dishware. They all have a bare ceramic ring on the bottom that can strop a fine edge on a blade.

But I just got my belt sander back and I like the sound of some 1500 grit belts.
You always amaze, Leo.

This is a cool tool!
As a former commercial fisherman, (who wore a knife for safety, constantly on my slicker's suspenders) I love the retractor feature. I used to have nightmares about getting snagged in the long line, being pulled OVRBD and dropping my knife as I tried to save my sorry ass from drowning! I think I will be gettin one of these.

That's sweet. I too recently purchased a rigid body knife to carry on my vest. You never know what could happen. I took advantage of the big 5 coupon ($10off $50purchase) bought a cot for camping $39.99 and got a $60 knife that was on sale for $14.99 for basically free. My total was somewhere near $45.00 total
