So, I caught my first freshwater fish in about 29 years. I think I was 10 the last time I caught a freshwater fish. I have learned of Cerritos Regional park, which is about 5 minutes from my work. I went to the lake this morning for about 15 minutes and I caught this

I think its a bluegill

That's really cool I've never even seen a bluegill get pulled out of there. Usually it's catfish, bass, and trout. Nice job  Thumbs Up

This being my first bluegill ever, the picture of the fish is haning in my cube at work. It looks so macho next to my 40lb albacore and 35lb halibut Very Happy

Aw... Very nice. Reminds me of my very first surf perch (dink) on my very first surf fish. Felt like such an achievement.

That might be a Red Ear Sunfish.

They do have the black spot in the same place, but the coloring is different.

Its a Bluegill, Redear have a large red patch on the side of the gill plate hence Redear.

True that. However, the red patch is behind the black spot and sometimes is not readily visible. I was judging by the body coloration. It likely is a bluegill. I am positive it is a Sunfish!  Cool
