First kids fishing Clinic is in the books

We all meet up at about 8:30 am at a little after 9 we had 10 kids from the La Habra Summer camp show up eager to catch a fish. Well Flyfishingfool, GT, Casting Call and I got to work talking to the kids helping them to understand the sport of fishing. After a short talk we got the kids out on the water to practice casting. lesson was learned by myself spool all reals myself, don't use the the store bought rod and reels that come pre-spooled. So we had a lot of knotes to get out but we pushed on. Next set them up and do some bluegill fishing most of all kids caught fish and all had a lot of fun. So here are some pictures from GT of the day I will post some from my phone and my wifes. I would like to give a very big THANK YOU to Casting Call, GT and Flyfishingfool for all there help this never would have happened with out there help as well as everyone that donated to the cause.

It was pretty fun, a little tiring, but fun. This following conversation I had with one of the kids pretty much sums up what its all about:

ME (after the kid lands a baby bass, the first fish of the day mind you!): See! You know how to fish now.

Kid: (He babbles about how he almost caught a fish one time bare handed..his first and only fishing experience..lol)

ME: You;ll have to tell your dad to take you out fishing, now that you can catch fish!

Kid: I dont really see my dad. He doesnt live with us.

ME: Well, ask your mom to take you!

Kid: My mom is sick.

ME: Any older brothers or sister you can ask?

Kid: No, they are still little.

ME: (Quiet because I started feeling bad for the kid)

Kid: I KNOW! ILL ASK GRAMPA! HE HAS TWO FISHING RODS!

I sure hope his grampa starts taking the kid fishing....

Im sorry I missed this event, i wanted to participate. I have been off line for 3 weeks. It looks like it was very rewarding teaching the kids to fish.

Thanks to the Kids..........I had a great time. We worried about the spinning reels, wanting push button reels. Other than the bird nests, the Kids adapted to the spinning reels like they do phones.......amazing.

I want to thank Jeff for the experience, working with the kids, it's something I will cherish. GT

Great job out there guys    The conversation described is heartbreaking but it sounds like the kid is hooked for life. Hopefully he has someone that can take him and be a roll model for him.

That scenario is all too real and happens more often than not. I have met a few kids on the piers with similar circumstances and I always go out of my way to help them out. I also always make sure to hook them up with swimbaits, leadheads, and whatever other stuff I might have with me at the time. It's great seeing there face light up like if it was Christmas!

This went very well in fact pictures were posted that day on the La Habra Facebook page and parents of the kids that did not get to go were calling in saying "hey why did my kid not get to go". We will be working on this same event for next year. So I am sure we will need all hands on deck because we will have a larger group of kids.
Also the have asked me to take this program to the SCMAF Institute, not sure who this works. What I do know is this Institute is were other City in the State of California find new programs to bring to there City.   

Kudos to all who helped, nothing like seeing a kids smile!

This is so much for those who helped and even more fun for the kids!
Not sure how I missed this event, but for sure include me in future in teaching children how to fish.
Children are our only hope!
