MY DESIGN WAS INSPIRED BY f4mnect's BACK-REST STIFFENER:

Bob had me sit down on his float tube; to get an idea of all of the lower-back support that he has added to his back-rest. WOW! I'm SOLD!
I hope that my DIY will pan out, we'll see.

After a while our Cumberland foam seats aren't as comfortable as they once were when they were new, they bend in shape after a while.

Cumberland glues two 1" sheets of foam together for their back rest.
* So I washed it, I dried it and then I split-it-open thru it's center across it's very top side (L to R, length wise), not to disturb the outside edges or the bottom edge of pad.
I'd say that I opened at least 97% of it's interior to form a rectangular slot or pocket.

It almost fit perfectly, I only had to cut 1" off the bottom side of the sign and then I used a rasp to shape and to round-off all four quarters.
I then inserted a solid sheet of fiberglass: which was once a roadway sign in it's other life and now it's a seat stiffener.

I added clear Gorilla Tape to re-stiffen the four edges.

Another issue with the Cumberland is the Velcro that they use to secure the seat and the back-rest foam pads, where it tucks-back underneath the back-of-the-seat and just in-front of the Forward net flooring.

I used Marine Marina GOOP contact glue adhesive to adhere a high quality 1" wide double-sided Velcro strip to the bottom edge of the Cumberland's seat flap that tucks-back-in, just above the Forward's net flooring.

Right now I have it sandwiched between two 2"x 4" for the night. Runners use regular GOOP to repair their running shoes. I hope that it works!

The clamps will come off tomorrow.

Let us know how it works out. Might be a fun project for me in the future.

I certainly will!
I’ll be trying it out tomorrow.
I hope that I’ve improved the lower-back support. We’ll see!

Great job Dan,I just slid a cutting board behind my seat. I may have to rethink my seat after seeing your. But it has helped my lower back so much

I believe that you should post up and share your DIY added lower-back support idea w/ pic’s.

They may find your’s to be more to what they are looking for.

We have two different approaches with hopefully the same added lower back support results. We’ll soon see!

I liked your idea! 👍
