V H F RADIOS - thoughts?

What is the general opinion and discussion on these? Anyone take one with them and do you have a brand you like?

My fishing is taking me into bigger ocean and I think its time to consider this as a safety measure. But I don't know much about this topic and could use some tips.

I have many questions and hopefully you guys can help.

I'm always close on buying one, but I rather spend the money on fishing gear lol

I think it's always good to be safe out there while fishing, but could be over kill inside the harbor most people have cell phones but out side the break wall is a must.

I have never seen the need for a portable VHF but I would probably consider it if and when I decide to venture past the breakwater. The cell coverage on this coast is very good and has saved many butts out past the wall, so at very least having your cell phone with you is a good start. Thought I saw a marine emergency app once somewhere,.. will check that out and get back to you.
