I love realistic flies these are not mine but I would love to try to tie some of these some day.[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.][You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

When I first started tying as a teenager, I tried tying the realistic flies found in some of the books but found they were too time consuming and difficult to be practical. Then you don't want to put it in the water because it is more a work of art. My mindset now is more like that of my fishing buddy. Tie as simple as possible and only tie what works and forget the fancy stuff.

Very true but they are so cool looking. I will try to find my black Widow I tied years ago. Not as good as these but it I like the way it came out. I did fish it as well no fish caught but it was tough to cast it the first few times as it really was to me a work of art rather than a simple fly. Twisted Evil

I learned in Montana, at the Grizzly Hackle Fly shop,
I recommend you learn the fundamentals first, and choose a couple of flies you want to tie and buy material accordingly.
I learned basics and fundamentals in Montana but now I see so many different flies I want to tie but now lacking materials lol
I did get a great set up for cheap, out here in Big Bear.
Got a vise, pedestal and 100’s of dollars in material for $40.
And some books! Invest in books.
Great way to learn!

I started with the basics and using books to get me started. I do think that getting some lessons would have helped. Another way to start out is on YouTube as there are some good video's teaching these basics. How ever you start if you really want to try just go for it it is a lot of fun.

Yes! YouTube is a great source.
The guy who taught me learned on YouTube, now he wins competitions.
In the end it’s all about practice.
I’ve tied a bit of my favorites.
The Chili Pepper Wooly Bugger
Foam Back Humpies
Yellow Sallies
Parachute Adam’s
Purple Haze...etc
There are so many variations of each, it’s Impossible to get it wrong.

My Foam Back Humpy.
I used the green foam instead of white.
But it worked great on the Blackfoot in Missoula

I haven’t tested it in Mammoth yet.
Hopefully as soon as this pandemic goes away, I’ll be out there
