So when was the last time you took a look at inside of your reels.
So my thumb bar on my chronarch 200e7 has been sticking on me so I figured it was time to do a little bit of service and give some tuning a turn.
First I what to say Shimano is getting cheap with there parts. When I pulled the spool out I knew this wasn't going to be good as I seen rust. First time I have ever seen this in any of my reels.
So a complete tear down, soak, clean, sand and polished needed parts
Lite grease and drop of oil here and there and it feels better than new.
Now do I upgrade the bearings or leave it ?
Reel is done and will be put to work Saturday,
Working on a reel from Gilbert and I have 3 more to go. Here are a free pix

very nice job Miller! How did you take off all that residue from the gear? I like to service my own stuff but that is the only thing that I can't completely remove. I use Coleman fuel to clean my gears...

Good looking work, brother.
I take apart every reel I get and clean, sort and re-lube the innards. I replace parts if even slightly compromised and have been know to make a few myself, when unavailable.

I don't use a lot of grease - just the right kinds applied to the right places.
Same with oil... a little goes a long way and if it's not applied where it matters, its useless.
The only extra I add is a light mist to the interior.

My two go-to lubes are

a. Festo-Gel.
A teflon based, NGLI grade 2 grease, mainly used in the food and pharma industry. I use it because it is intended for fine machine works and, being food-grade, is ecologically inert. This is important to me since reels and other fishing gear are around water, and a good dunking is always looming...
b. ISO 68 weight punch lube oil.
Another food-grade product. This is a synthetic, silicon based lube oil, again primarily used in the pharma industry. It is just the right consistency to stay where it is placed, but provides superior lubrication.

Neither of these will be commonly available, I'm pretty sure, and not really worth the trouble to try and track down. I am blessed to work in pharma manufacturing (Preventive Maintenance Coordinator) and so have access to these things.
However, I mention it at all as they may serve as inspiration for fellow anglers and reel smiths. Other silicone and teflon based lubes are on the commercial market and you should be able to find something comparable.

David, always good for you to share you wealth of knowledge. Unfortunately, you're dead right about Festo-Gel and ISO68 lube oil being hard to find online for purchases. I'll definitely look around the manufacturing industries around here, since there are plenty of distribution sites near where I live.

Leo, thanks.
I was afraid of the supply aspect when mentioning these two lubes...
But once armed with their specs, some equivalent should present itself.

Damn nice work at a great price. Love to have my reels tricked out and spin beyond my control!
Then I need cast control on the reel.
