Fish finders

I know a lot of you guys use hummingbird buddies but for the guys using external powered units what setup are you using for battery storage for keeping everything dry and where about are you storing your battery on your tube?

I currently have a cheap battery powered hand held unit that works but a friend just sent me this lowrance that should be a whole lot better than my cheap unit.

This is my set-up, waterproof box, in-line fuse, on/off switch, automotive plug.......GT

It sets in a 5 gal. bucket behind my seat. I have a 5 way plug for furture night fishing, adding lights for me and boaters..........

The mounting isn't the problem Jeff, I'm just weighing up my options. For now the battery will have to be stowed in one of my pockets until I upgrade and have space behind my seat.
So weight is the issue I'm just wondering whether to go 12V or get a battery pack and run rechargeable AA batteries

If your only running finder, go the easy route, rechargeables.....GT

Thanks GT would you recommend 8 or 10 rechargeable AA batteries? Still run an in-line fuse?

I don't think u need it with AA......As far as how many, is it color, dual display? Run 10....if only B&W, u could get away with 8 and be on the water all day. U will just have to experiment with usage.  Look it up on Google and see what the spec's r.....GT

BTW, the 12 volt in the box weighs 5.25 lbs.

The one from Fishfindermounts.com isn't just a mount... The name is deceiving. It's actually a really nice all in one setup. The mount straps on firmly and sits atop the actual battery. With that being said, I bought a rechargeable battery and charger from batterysharks.com that gives me at least 8 hours on a color fish finder. Couldn't tell you how long it lasts as I charge it just to be safe after every trip but my voltage has never fell below 12.5v or so. I have it mounted with the fish finder mount sold with the teamfishco.com rod racks. I have the old school V-1 rod rack design. Very pleased with my purchase. Honestly though... I use the inline fuse that came with my FF but don't keep it in a box or anything... I just keep it in the pocket of my tube. If I ever don't return to port y'all know why. I was probably electrocuted. Seriously though, I would have to capsize in order for it to get wet.

Here's my set up. pretty simple to do.

I keep it in the left hand pocket on my tube. more than enough room in there, and it makes cord maintenance a snap.

Where can I find a good waterproof box and AA battery box for my lowrance? Would rather not buy a big heavy battery.

Sure thing, they are all marine grade receptacles. Starting on the left is your standard 12v (think vehicle cigarette lighter), I use it mainly for my air pump when it is necessary to inflate the tube away from the car. Next is a dual USB port that I use for charging my phone on the water. The last plug is a Marinco trolling motor receptacle, I wired my fish finder to the male portion (plug).

I have a couple of batteries that I swap in and out, charging one while the other is in use. They are both 12v 7a batteries that typically cost between $20-$30. I can get about 3 trips of 4-5 hours runtime before it drops below 12v. The finder will run on as low as 10v.

Awesome, a plug to charge the phone, outstanding. Looks like a mod to my battery box is in the future.
