making bait here's my options.... from n to s MDR i lived there for a few years... i would buy it from the bait reciever or chum up some smelt at burtun chase park using bread crumbs and sabaki rigs.... alamitos bay full of bait again chum them up at restaurant row or the docks by ocean and i believe 25th st.... Nph the pavilion docks are good for smelt..... dana point I buy it there... same goes for oceanside harbor.... and diego i dont need bait

the public dock on coral street is usually good for smelt. i took a peanut butter jar, cleaned it out and drilled a bunch of holes in it and the lid. i ran a cord through the jar so i could hang on to it. every time i go out, i fill it with bread, cheese, or whatever else i think will draw in live bait. let the jar fill with water and then shake it up as it drains. then as i drift, the bait follows me. the harbor becomes my live well.

if you need mackerel, use canned cat food.

if you want some brown bait, the m street public dock on the peninsula side holds shiner perch. tip your sabiki rig with shrimp and drop down around the dock. rather than using the up/down motion, just let the rig drop all the way down. the perch will take the bait. i find it easier to catch perch when the water isn't moving so fast.
