I would start in a local lake with an easy entry location like next to a launch ramp. You can use the launch ramp but be careful the concrete can get very slippery

Lake Perris for beginners I Think might be overwhelming. Like @jeffcpr mentioned try a local lake. Or maybe even a paid lake or fishing hole like Irvine lake, Corona, and Santa Ana River Lakes. The water will be a bit calmer. calm water is best to learn how to paddle and controlling your turns, etc. Perris gets a lot of sport boaters, skiers and sea doos that makes it rough at times. Just my thoughts. Good Luck

Whatever you do don't go to Perris! There is absolutely no fish in that lake!!!

Just kidding, as you can see by the other threads on this forum there are plenty of quality toads there. I just can't catch any of them!!! 3 months into my fishing New Years resolution and still smell like skunk. BUT I WILL NOT GIVE UP!

I have been there a few times in the last month during the week and boat traffic has been very lite. The $10 parking is way better than what you will pay at corona.

I been meaning to go back there, so HMU if you want to meet up and I will help get you ON THE WATER!

If you want to get on the fish, you might need to go with some of the more experienced guys on here. Red Smile

@idratherbefishing I don't mean to discourage you from going to perris lake. After all you're gonna want to go bigger. Just my thought on the traffic but like @bigmouthbasshole mentioned it wasn't too busy. I might want to go and hit it soon. The reason I mentioned those paid lakes is the traffic is minimal. Look into the lakes and ponds near your area. I recently learned that float tubes are not considered vessels required to pay the launch fees. So if they allow kayaks and small boats you're good.

Just a few suggestion, since it's getting warm, and within the range of travel within the Murrieta areas:

1. Lake Elsinore (entry fee, very calm water)
2. Lake Perris (entry fee, with a bit of a drive, turbulent water)
3. Corona Lake (massive entry fee, extremely calm water, recommend wader!)
4. Irvine Lake (need wader, and entry fee, but calm water)

When you are truly ready:
a. Big Bear Lake (you need legs of steel, need launch fee)
b. Silverwood Lake (pray that you don't drift, just entry fee)
c. Lake Gregory (calm lake, mainly trout).
d. Jenks Lake (very calm lake, mainly trout, and greenfish. WADER!!)

When you are a daredevil:
i. SD bays
ii. Huntington Bay
iii. California Aqueducts (I'll pray for you).

Hey TheAsianGuy welcome back we missed you around here, I have a question for you. Water quality for Lake Elsinor, I have heard both ways don't touch it or it has been cleaned up for the most part. You are the guy to ask what do you say Sir.

1. Water Quality for Lake Elsinore has improved tremendously. When I say tremendously, I'm not kidding. It beats even Big Bear and Perris.

2. Lake Elsinore, based on the 2009 to 2011 fish tissue sampling report, in comparison to 2003 and 2005, in comparison also to the rest of the inland waters, I can kneel down and say, EAT EVERYTHING IN THAT WATER THAT SWIM! Well, everything that is bigger than 4oz of course, which has a tail, fins, and put up a good fight.

3. There will be a 2013 fish tissue sampling for all inland waters soon, so, there will even be more interesting news later in 2014.

So far, my candidates for fishing are:

1. SALTON SEA!!! (yep..as spring hits, I'm heading over there). Perris is in flux, so, the best fishing place for the family and friends is at Salton Sea, primarily location is at the museum or further west side.

2. Lake Elsinore. The best lake there is compared to the other lakes in the valley of the I.E..

3. Big Bear Lake, near the solar observatory or Grout Bay. The weeds are creating a safe environment, where the plants providing the cover for the bait fish, while the bigger predators are hunting them. Great fun time on the tube, and the turbulence will be minimal.

Just a warning as you fish in the Elsinore water. Just don't wander yourself too close to the far west side to the southeast area of the lake, where you can see the water treatment plant. The water there is quite clean. Clean enough to drink from, after a good boil. The water there is also used to test out the water quality impact on the fish population, which also happens to be the fish sanctuary/fishery testing ground. You probably find a mix bag of massive predators there, but you also entitling yourself to a big fat ticket as a poacher as well. So, be careful.

Yeap, I used to set up a drift through there on my boat before the engine went south on it. Big Bear has lots of nice little holes if you know how/where to fish them from, kicking the whole lake would be a pain, but there are lots of different places to launch from, and with everything from Crappie, Bluegill, Catfish, LM and SMB plus the trout there. Big Bear would have to rank as one of my favorites. Can't wait to tube up there (water's still a bit cold to tube there currently)

I went up there to perform water and land survey yesterday. Water was surprising warm at the surface to the touch. I wouldn't go into the water without a wader though. Light wader, you can survive a good 4 hours without freezing your legs off. Naked, well, you won't last more than an hour before you turn purple.
