Lets set a new FTFF record

For some time now we have seen on the bottom of the page,  Most users ever online was 51 on Sun 3 Jun - 7:57

Sign in this Saturday (Sept. 7th) to the board at 8pm Pacific standard time let cursh that.  Seem funny, but I am tired of looking at the number 51 I want to see 151 we can do it.

Sorry, guys, I missed this post. What was going on when the forum had 51 at once? Were you organizing some type of get-together? I'll take a dive into the archives if I can.

Rats. The forum search tools do not search by dates. I trolled through a number of popular forums to see what was happening on June 3, 2012, but nothing caught my eye that was out of the ordinary. Perhaps it was just one of those days when lots of folks had an urge to check out FTFF.

I'll do a little theorizing since I don't have any actual data to support anything I'm saying. On June 3, 2012 we had 51 simultaneous members on the site because:

1. It was a weekend (fewer folks at work);
2. It was a Sunday morning (more people at home and online);
3. It was in early June (after Memorial Day and before Mother's Day so folks weren't traveling all over);
4. It was early in the morning on the West Coast (which means all the other time zones across the US were still in the morning as well. Jeff said that the special moment happened at 7:57 a.m. I live in WI, so the forum notes said the event happened at 9:57 a.m. Any East Coasters would see the notes saying the event happened at 10:57 a.m.

Given all that, the most likely time that we will ever surpass 51 simultaneous viewers again will probably be on a Sunday morning when nothing much is going on for families and workers.

For example, as of 10:15 p.m. CST today, over 60 members have logged into the FTFF site, but at many different times. There's about 6-8 members online as I write this.

So my unscientific ramblings suggest that if we ever want to beat the record, we should shoot for a Sunday morning between holidays. If planning something like this is too hard, we can just put out the challenge/encouragement to log in at the top of any hour on Sunday mornings.

Make it a mantra: FTFF - Sundays - 8,9,10,11 - do it.

We need a new date

If we make a planned attack on the record for most simultaneous members at one time, we need to promote something like this:

Pacific timezone: Log in at 8:00 a.m.
Mountain timezone: Log in at 9:00 a.m.
Central timezone: Log in at 10:00 a.m.
Eastern timezone: Log in at 11:00 a.m.

...on a specific Sunday morning. If, for example, we choose Sunday, Nov. 3, we'll all get an extra hour of sleep as a pre-reward for logging into FTFF later that morning!

I just had a large margarita so my brain is thinking differently...

To promote the challenge of setting a new record, what if Jeff sent some kind of prize to a lucky winner pulled out of a hat from all those who logged into FTFF at a simultaneous time on a set date? To qualify for the prize, a member has to log in within a specified time AND the forum as a whole has to set a record for simultaneous members logged in. One side benefit for everyone is that a lot of members will be reading and posting, thus generating some good energy for FTFF. OK - time for a nap before I go to bed...

Looks like we have an agreed date on which to assault the record for logging in at the same relative time: Nov. 3, 2013

It's probably best to try to beat the record during the morning hours. Because of the timezones across the US, the members in the Pacific zone (CA, OR, WA, NV) will have to do the heavy lifting because they have the most members, but also have to wake up earlier than the rest of us. Good thing the clock falls back an hour at 2:00 a.m. that morning so you can get your beauty rest and log in at 8:00 a.m.

Folks from ID, UT, MT, WY, CO, NV (Mountain zone) will need to log in at 9:00 a.m. to be able to sync with Pacific zone folks.

AZ is a special case since they don't observe Daylight Savings Time except for the Navajo Nation. That means their clocks don't fall back on Nov. 3.

AZ members will need to log in at 10:00 a.m. along with the members from the Central zone (ND, SD, NE, KS, OK, TX, MN, IA, MO, AR, LA, WI, IL, MS, AL, TN, KY, IN, FL)

Members from states that are split by two time zones will need to pay attention, but you are used to doing that. (ND, SD, NE, TN, KY, IN, FL)

Eastern zone members will log in at 11:00 a.m. (MI, IN, KY, TN, GA, FL, OH, WV, ME, VT, NY, PA, VA, NC, SC, NH, MA, RI, CT, NJ, DE, MD, DC)

Members from HI, AK, and US territories as well as members from around the world can chime in if you are wondering when to sync with the Pacific time zone.

The record-breaking attempt will be a challenge in terms of numbers. Jeffcpr was the first member back in January 16 of 2010. By the time the current record of 51 simultaneous logins was set on June 3, 2012, FTFF had 453 members. That was 11% of the members.

(Fun fact: bassfishing24/7 joined on the day before the record was set.)

Currently, FTFF has 1056 members. To break the record we would need 5% of our members to log in. Easy, right? Perhaps not. If you sort the membership list by last login date, only 150 members have logged in so far this month of September. We'll need at least one third of our active loggers to join us on Nov. 3 to simply break the record. Smashing the record will be very hard, I think.

Many people have created accounts over the years; many may continue to visit without logging in, but many have disappeared along the way. Easy come; easy go.

As we promote Nov. 3 as a day to break the record, we may also want to think about how to have fun with the attempt. The best things about FTFF are the members. We share info, have fun, plan outings, etc. There really isn't any bickering or trolling (the bad kind) to speak of. That's what brings me back at least 4-7 times a week.
