Thanks TonyG.........As to your question, I use light tackle for yellowtail and butts. Medium rod, braid on one(conventional) and 10lbs XXX on the other(spinning). Tuna on the other hand, is a different beast. They run hard and deep, so you need a stout rod with heavy line, I'd say 40lbs and up. In braid that's still a small diameter line and it will cut anyone else's mono if they don't pay attention! You need to check reports and see the size of the fish and where you decide to fish, say Mexico, your talking bigger tuna. Tuna can be an expensive venture......GT

Sounds fun, I have always wanted get into fish deep sea but I know know anything about it. like getting a rod, line, tackle weights, hooks. Living in so cal and only 30 min away from newport I would think i would try to learn it. Only been deep see fishing once over a year ago and caught a yellow tail. I think it ws davey jones locker and we drove the sea more than fished.... left a biter taste in my mouth

Ya I hear you NeKro.......I won't do Catalina Island anymore. It's hit and miss, 5 hours of boat ride and 4 hours of fishing. 3/4 day at Dana fishes up and down the coast. Will target sand bass, calico's, butts and yellow-tail. I grew up fishing Ocean, dad had a boat and charter license, fished harbors and then later the rigs. Back then their was plenty of fish locally, not so much anymore. Dana Wharf supports catch and release, pretty much what I do when I'm out fishing the ocean.

thanks for the info and yes its tuna and dorado will be chasing, i have a 100 dolla gift certificate to Anglers Center in Oceanside...right now im looking at the Avet s/x 6/4 249.99, so it would be 149.99 Twisted Evil plus a nice rod for 120-150, should do the job Thumbs Up

Report.......The whole boat, 41 anglers got SKUNKED!.......The captain said they were constantly moving. They were also feeding at 120-180 ft. eating rock fish. 10oz of lead and a dropper loop, with great sardine bait. And the weather was great. You couldn't have asked for a better trip. Got to meet some great fisherman, had about 10 ladies on board, all after the yellowtail...........GT
