Wasn't sure where I should post this topic but anyone ever have issues/run ins with seals? They get pretty bold and I assume they wouldn't have any issues with snatching your halibut or other catch if it were dangling from the side of your tube on a stringer. Which leads me to question #2...how do you usually store a keeper butt while on the water?

I don't lol! if you hold on to it you simple have to take the chance. And make sure you have a change of underwear, just in case you have a seal encounter ha ha .

This is just a video I found on YouTube. It is not me. Lol..
However, I have thought about getting something like this for self protection while on the water. Probably not in a 223 round though, I was thinking more on the lines of a .45.
They use these bangsticks down south with hunting alligators. I figured it would work just as well on seals.

I don't stress about seals unless I were to have a halibut hanging from the side of my tube. I know a guy that was dragged buy a seal do to having a halibut hanging from his tube. so ever since that if I were to keep a halibut I have it covered on the back of my tube. But I always have a gaff on me just incase.

Don't know how to put this, but you kill or wound a seal, JAIL time in Cal. Not enough sharks........and yes I saw a fellow at the Pud who made a fish well made out of an old ice chest. Had holes drilled in the bottom and foam tubing attached to the outside for flotation......GT

I just carry my gaff or a plastic mallett. When they get too close I bang on the crossbar and they usually get the point. If they get closer....

yah those sea lions are butt holes, they scare the S**t out of me in the harbor, especially at night omg fear for your lives!. but i have seen this floating bobber its big and ment to just float with you on your tube, its for holding drinks but im sure you could just put water in it and use as a live well. but i prefer catch release. A few weeks ago my fishing buddy and I were at the Quivira Basin in Mission Bay and a sea lion went after the bass he was reeling in. Only thing left on the hook was the fish head. Then the same sea lion came up to me when I caught one too; I was freaking out, I thought it was gonna jump on my tube but it didn't. It was starting at me from a distance (6 feet or so); it reminded me of my dog waiting for me to give him food haha It waited for me to unhook the fish and grabbed it when I threw it back in the water. It played with it for like 10 min, chewing it and throwing it out of the water like it wanted to entertain us. It was pretty funny actually.

My advice: don't panic, keep an eye on the sea lion (distance and attitude), and quickly release the fish (whatever catch you might have, keeper or not) and you'll be fine.

Just don't make sudden moves Razz jk

Man was just bycatch. Either "grip and grin" on land or not so close to the rail of the boat.  Sea lion doing what sea lions do (see food - eat.) No biggie, blown out of proportion.  Big thread over at SoCalSurfFishing on this one.     Killer sea lions?  scratch  no, Darwin just working his charms.

Not so much of a problem up my way but I've heard they're becoming more and more of a problem down in San Diego.

Yea thats usualy what i do, but when i catch one early in the day it just goes behind the seat. If its a really bright hot day then i gotta make the decision keep the fish and leave (so it dont get sunbaked) or release and keep fishing.

lucky for me the only times i caught a halibut early in the day it was gloomy all day so fish stayed fresh.
