So want to build my own rod holder for my new tube I just purchased. Got a bunch of ideas but for my first try want to keep it cheap and simple to get me out on the water. My question is what size pvc do I need to get started? What cost do you think I am looking at? Going to head to Home Depot once I get that info. Thanks guys

Schedule 40 , will fit most rod handles no problem ... and not to heavy

1/2 or 3/4 inch?

Inch and 1/4 is what is necessary for most rod handles to fit into. so I guess you could but a few adapters, but I built my entire rack out of 1 1/4 inch. I have a swivel trolling holder in front, two up-tubes for a net and pliers, and two angled rod holders facing straight back behind me. pics as soon as I can. total cost was around $36

Schedule 40 1 1/4 inch pvc is the perfect size for most rods. The down side is it's heavy. ABS is a lot lighter but the smallest size it comes in is 1 1/2 inch. I made a rod holder with the 1 1/4 inch pvc but switched to abs. 1 1/2 inch abs doesn't seem to be too big like I thought it would and works fine.

Good advice from above. Build what your comfortable with.
I've built a couple of rodholders from ABS so I am geared up for that.

PVC in schedule 40 is a little heavier than ABS. PVC has more threaded options for rotating holders.
I have seen lighter weight PVC used and was pretty impressed.

Here is a link to Patrick's build with a lighter weight PVC

Hopefully this helps you out. Might have spend $30? I can't remember.

You'll need 1/2 in. - 2 in. PVC Cutting Tool ($30)
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

and 8 oz. ABS Cement in Black ($5)

I have another one that is almost identical if you like. $30 and it's yours. Smile

BTW, just by the 10 foot 1 1/2" abs pipe for $7 and cut it; it's cheaper that way.

The second version has your finder farther up, and an extra arm with Y junction out to the side of the vertical piece, did your neck get tired from turning to look at the finder?

Actually the FF remained in its original position. Look at the clip that connects to the D rings, it's still on the left of the FF.

I just cut the front trolling holder and placed it next to the 1st vertical holder. It was just too "far" to reach up front; I had to move my back forward and extend my arm. Not really a big deal but when you catch a fish you want to be quick and that slowed me down. Now it's literally right there on my left side, closer and easier to reach. And yes, I added an extra arm with the Y junction because I felt that space was a waste and I could have used another holder where I now store my net/gaf. Smile

I'd say it's almost impossible for anyone's neck to get tired from "turning" to look at the FF because it's such a tiny movement. The FF is literally right there within eye sight, I wouldn't want it any other place.

Ah ok filippodg, I was just wondering thats all. Makes sense to have the trolling setup as close as possible, I've lost rods while trolling because it took me too long to get there (among other reasons)! Thanks for posting the pics though, I may give one of these rigs a try now

Np. Smile

More than leaning forward and taking "long" to get my rod, it was always an awkward movement of my wrist that I felt I was about to drop my rod in the water that far out.

Def give it a try, it's actually a really fast process. Cutting the ABS takes 5 secs per piece, then glue the interior, and attach. It's really that easy. Smile

Still have it.

If you're new to float tubing and need one, let me know, I'll help you out and give it away for free. Won't ship. Pick up in Rancho Bernardo.

This is my 1st rod rack that I built after looking at a LOLLY Design and designs by others on Utube, I constructed it using 1.5" ABS pipe. I had a couple of functionality issues with it.
I first mounted the rack on my left side, the 3rd-time out I mounted it on my right side and didn't care for it! So, now it's back on the left permanently!
I like to think of my rack as a "Salt Water" model. The FW model would have the piping for the FF .
In salt water harbors you can see all of the structures but in lakes you may need a fish finder for locating underwater depths, drop-offs, ledges and trees.
So I shaved off weight not gluing together additional ABS FF pipe and fittings.
My Bogga-grip and my needle-nose pliers both fit inside of the 2" ABS cup as a conveniently located tool storage.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

I just finished building my 2nd (Dan modified) rod rack with subtle changes that made a huge difference for me.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

I didn't really care for how far forward I had to lean and reach beyond that to have the rod handle of the rod clear the swivel front holder.
I also like having my tools forward where I need them.

I also separated the two rear rod holders; even more, so that the reels have room and they don't hit the ABS holders anymore. Plus rod leashes.

I also added the blue colored stick-to-it's-self velcro strap thru the D-ring to adjust and secure the very best vertical position of the rod holder.

Have fun designing and constructing a light weight rod holder that will help keep your gear organized!
If you like mine .... copy it for yourself!

Tip [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] ..... don't be too quick to glue your ABS.
