The rain on Friday and into Saturday was monster in Long Beach, but against my better judgement I decided to go out Sunday morning to overcast skies and the occasional rain drop.

I launched off the beach at the Los Alamitos Volleyball Courts and right away saw that the water was looking muddy. Not good.

I threw mostly spinnerbaits in various colors both light and dark and tried to work the top, middle, and bottom of the water column.

I fished around Island Grissom for a couple of hours with no luck and decided to give the surf a try and after an hour of working the surf, I caught a small yellow fin croaker on an anchovy swimbait with the coolbait silver underspin and decided that killing the skunk was good enough and called it a day.

Fishing the inshore salt right after a rain storm is not such a good idea?

Confirmed.

No doubt! lol Wink

That's why I didn't venture out right after a heavy rain ... all of the SD's release all their collected trash and roadway oils ... right into our harbors  Sad .
I'll definitely be giving that particular AO a couple of weeks to recoup.

Thanx for your session report,

SP Dan     <"))><

After a storm i likw throwing bigger swimbaits like the 3.8 inch mutant tackle on a 1/2 oz head

The way the warblade works best is if you let it hit bottom take 5 quick cranks and let it fall and repeat the axeblade and spin shad are the same and those i slow roll with my rod tip pointed up

Find the eel grass with about 6 -10 feet of water above it on the low tide and fish right over the top of it if your gear is dialed yoy can feel it ticking the grass

I've heard some of you guys are getting above average rainfall in Cali. We got some rain here last night.

Lakes are gonna be really tough for a bit here.

Hope everyone is ok out your way. We were lucky around here. The really rough weather was south. (Possible tornado in San Antonio, and flooding to the west .)

BTW Frank, I did find out Cali bass are typically longer than Texas bass. (You learn stuff all the time if you try!) So...my apologies.

Good luck guys. ( Maybe those bays will be fresh enough to take a sip out of.)

Thanks for the tips and recommendations, Frank, much appreciated!

I've been using really light gear, my heaviest rod is only rated to 3/8 oz. lures, but I've been thinking that I want to move up a bit and you're the third person recently who has told me they regularly throw the larger stuff.

I have a friend who says she used to throw the 1/2 oz. warblades but does better with the 3/4 oz. They have the same size blade and basic body size so I think it's due to the heavier head staying closer to the bottom on her retrieve.

Looks like it's time to start saving for that Phenix Maxim 7'2" I've had my eye on so I can throw those bigger baits. Smile

I snapped a surf rod once by pushing the rated limit, so I'm a bit gun shy about tossing baits heavier than the rod rating, even though I have definitely done it from time to time.

Thanks again!

Really!..  $12.00 for that Damiki Axe Blade!?!  I not paying that!  I use the Tom Mann's "Little George" tailspins and I have used these since they were first made, way back around 1970.  Buy them at Walmart.  They were on sale for $2.68, but not sure if they are still at that great price.  I like the 1/2 ounce size.  I usually change out the hooks, or at least sharpen the stock ones. We fish them under the PCH bridge in Newport Bay for the occasional Striper, but all kinds of fish would hit it, just have to fish them on a moving tide.  Go up close to a piling and drop the lure straight down right next to it.  Work it up and down and be ready for a hard strike.

Is that a Little George or a Boy George? Way more "dolled" up than I remember. Razz

I just never had much success with them and got hung up too easily, so never really became a fan of them.

Now, about the same time, Tom came out with a scented worm. If I'm not mistaken, it was the first. That was a game changer. Also, IIRC, that was about the time hotspots came out, and a few years later, the first fatbelly billed crankbaits.

My favorite weapon of choice was the slab spoon.
