I'm 100% with Jerdon on this one Jeff, I use the
San Diego Jam knot tied directly to the hook and the
Royal Polaris knot for my braid to mono or fluorocarbon leader.
I've used and trusted the
Double-Uni knot for years ... It's a strong and proven knot, but it takes some time to tie it correctly ... so ... just recently I switched over to the Royal Polaris knot ... it's easier, faster to tie and it's strong.
For the Drop Shot I tie on the
Palomar knot ... also a very proven and strong knot.
Good luck on your knots Jeff! Let's land more fish!
A few Novice mistakes that I learned along the way:
1. You get what you pay for!
2. Constantly check your lines for abrasions, nicks and line knots ... it happens!
3. Inspect your line and re-tie fresh knots before each new session.
4. Remember to always wet or lubricate your knot just before you cinch it tight!
5. Sharpen your hooks constantly.
6. Re-tie a fresh knot after each hook-up.
7. Keep your spools full with fresh line or fresh leader lines tied to your Spectra.
8. When tying mono or fluorocarbon leader to braid, remember to keep your knot just a little bit out in front of your spool; not in your spool, while casting.
9. After each hook-up or short bite, give a quick inspection to your line and knot near the hook.
10. Use the correct line test and gear for your targeted species.
11. If you are not happy with your line ... don't be afraid to strip the line off your reel and try another line.
If the line that you are using isn't working for you; for what ever the reason, and for your particular style of fishing ... change to another line.
