This morning was LA Harbor- unlike last Sunday where the tide was contrary (rushing out of the bay through the morning), today was absolutely perfect, with a tide filling the bay and pushing me back to the launch for the back half of the session.
I put in at 4:50 AM, and fished until about 9:00 or so and was out by 9:25. The fishing was very good the first 90 minutes, slowed down for the middle 90 minutes and the last 90 was a wind-fueled grind. Saw two other tubers in the water - they put in around 6:00 AM or so. Didn't recognize them. They went to fish in the slips and I didn't see them after 9:00.
The wind has been kicking up around 1:00 or 2:00 PM all week.. this morning it started at around 8:30, and got whipping by 9:00.
LA Harbor continues to eat gear. Especially when its filling and the kelp is pushed down so you can't see it well. Most of the HUBs I lost today were to kelp and only a few to rocks and fish sawing me off. This place does kick out larger fish.
The Fish
In at 4:50 AM, fished until around 9:00 AM and finally wound up and kicked to the exit. Had lots and lots of non-fishing retying leaders. Sad.
29 total
* 1 large Halibut (my personal best in a tube - 28". Sadly no vid or pics as it was still darkish)
* 1 Calico
* 1 NICE Sculpin
* 1 goofy Mackerel
* 1 Kelp Bass
* 4 Sand Bass (2 Legal)
* 20 Spotted Bay Bass (5 or 6 Legal)
The Gear Section
* Hookup Baits. 1/4 oz Minty Fresh, 3/8 oz Minty Fresh, 3/8 oz Sardine Dream, 5/8 Glow Green. HUB Crustacean (red) scent
* I think the tube is finally configured as I like it
* Forgot the Stripping Apron... didn't miss it
* Humminbird died at hour 4.... It generally makes it 7 hours or so. Have no idea what happened. Doing a battery test tonight.
What I learned
* I hate to leave fish to find fish. Today, I only fished 3 distinct areas, as they kept kicking out the feesh.
* Hook Up baits rule. That is all.
* For LAH, green glow HUBs are the sheit... I would bring a fish in, and on the next cast on the drop BAM.... I had 3, 4 and 5 in a rows on this session. That bait was on fire.
* I could have gotten to breakfast sooner. I don't like to grind. When it shuts off, I bolt. I over-stayed by about 30 - 40 minutes today
Notes for next trip
* Much better not slamming the rod butt into the GoPro. Bit with no stripping apron, the rod would clank on the front bar. Gonna put a pool noodle on that bar for next trip. Should solve the problem
* I need to bring a jacket every time. When I was exposed, it was cold with the wind this morning.
LAH eats gear. Gotta go place my HUB order
