I watched the video about 2 times and a few parts that interested me about 5 times. The only thing I noticed about this is it looks like a great design to remove the protective slime off of a fish so when you release it it's alive, healthy and kicking only to wind up dead on the bottom of the lake the next few days or so. Especially when he showed how you can use it to cradle a fish for pictures.

I could be wrong but it kind of reminds me of how anglers used to net Bass with a mesh nets for tournaments that would remove their slime then the next few days after Bass were showing up dead on the lake bottom that they had presumed to been released healthy and happy.

Well I was just thinking to use it for bait fish I would not want to wrestle a bass into a bag

good point, didn't even think about that...

i was thinking of using it for bait too. right now i've got an insulated bucket in the back of my fish cat with a portable aerator. for perch, that's all i need but for some of the pelagic bait fish, i have to remove the inner bucket and change the water really fast or use a hand bilge pump to pump water in. pros: bait is out of the water, pretty easy to set up and use. cons: it's heavy (water is over 8lbs/gal) and tube cleanup is a pain in the butt. also have to pump water every 10-15 minutes to keep bait alive (except for perch, they live forever)

Yes i was only thinking bait cause we catch, take a picture, and releasse no need to put your catch in the well but i am alway wondering if other fish or something bigger will attack the well in the water (salt water) but i am dont worried about fresh water live bait unless theres a snappin turle around and your just in his way lol

come to think of it, the only time i've seen sea lions and pelicans go after bait is when it's on the hook or on a stringer. i've never seen them go after bait buckets or mesh bags. only seen them used on docks though. get a little nervous dragging live bait around in the water. although, the way i use my chum jar for live bait, i guess it's not much difference between bait fish swimming around my legs or bait fish swimming in a mesh bag next to my tube.

I would imagine having that thing next to you in salt water full of bait fish they would be putting off scent and scales that might attract seals or other non-float tube friendly creatures but never know unless you try.

The few times I have used live bait on a kayak or a tube I just caught a few baitfish with a sabiki rig and put them in a small cooler with a battery powered aerator in it and occasionally poured some of the water out for fresh stuff.

I also used to have a small bucket with holes in it that went through the middle of a body board for putting live bait in and just towed it behind or next to me. That way no water changing since water just flowed through the holes in the bucket and if something wanted to eat the bucket it wasn't attached to me.

13live well Empty Fish-Trap Concerns Wed Aug 10, 2011 4:09 pm

There are several qualities to my design that make it very fish and user friendly and I noticed in some of the posts by site members concerns about fish mortality after fish contained in the Fish-Trap have been released. Let me assure you that in the past year of testing this design that neither my son nor I have had a bass die or show any sign of stress as a result of being held in the Fish-Trap. The primary body of water I have conducted my testing on is a deep extremely clear 80 acre up ground res in north central Ohio. My son and I fish this res two to three times a week in most cases and as a result have caught several fish with distinguishing marks many times over and over again, many of which have been held in my Fish-Trap. The unit is constantly wet and does no harm to the slime coat of the fish also the fish are free swimming in the Fish-Trap rarely touching the sides. There also seem to be concerns with holding bait in the unit and with its free floating design when it is used as a bait well in salt water it can be tethered far from the tube just in the event a predatory mammal or fish would decide to investigate its contents. With all due respect to you site members a little common sense has to be employed when using this item. I have worked long and hard in the development of the Fish-Trap and by no means claim to have thought of every scenario but I have addressed allot, mainly the welfare of the fish intended for release contained in the unit. The Fish-Trap is far superior to any other method used to hold your catch when fishing from a small craft, i.e. stringers, metal baskets, etc. I also understand that the Fish-Trap is not the perfect solution for everyone but on the same hand I feel that many will find it to be an essential tool in their angling experiences.

Thanks, Mark Headlee

Welcome Mark (TeamBASS2000) very interesting product, like ed said you answered a lot of question. I do understand the concern of harming the fish we catch. But your test seem to be worth a further look for some of us.
For me I was thinking this is a great design for a panfish tournament, of a weight in of your bag, and of course the idea of using it in the salt would be a great option for us out here in So Cal. (not for me still worried about the predators out there Embarassed ) Again welcome to the site and good luck with your Fish-Trap we all look forward to hearing more from you in the future. afro
