SD BAY shelter island 4/13 0600-0900

Fished San Diego Flyfisher event used 8 wt with 350 grain Rio Striper sink tip and orange/sage Clousers and Squimpi on 2 fly rig. fish 10-18ft. caught 7 SBB 2 macs and a dinky halibut. current too strong for me had to stay close to shore. Probably a good tide ride spot but current to strong to fish area with tide moving. launched at beach next to launch ramp for easy launch

Thanks for sharing I can imagine that currents can be hard to fish with the fly. But you seem to manage some fish so that is great.

Hi Capt Woody,

I'm really getting into fly fishing the bays. Been doing it about a year, but always looking for some advice on technique. My biggest question is the retrieve. I've been trying to get the strip at the right speed and pace, so I was wondering about your technique and whether you're kicking while stripping, or just stripping? And how erratic or consistent the pace, and speed?

I also fish a clouser/shrimp combo, and with the trailer shrimp getting nailed most of the time. I was wondering what size clouser and squimpi you've been using? I seem to do better with size 6s, but I'd like to know what you've had success with.

I use size 6's with a 5wt 26ft sink tip,6 ft 20 lb flouro to a leader ring. then one 10 lb 3ft leader and another 5 ft leader with squimpi in the rear and large eyed clousers in the front. I use fishfinder to find 8-12 ft ledges and I slowly kick along making 6" jerks on line pointing rod straight at fly. I strip set hook and don't lift rod past 9 o clock. Been averaging 15-35 fish a trip
