Since so many of you float tubers fish in the saltwater, some of you guys should 'tube the beach of Corona Del Mar. Not long ago, we would take my aluminum boat out of Newport Harbor and fish for halibut at CDM, just outside the buoy rope. We were just far enough out that you lost site of the bottom, about 15 to 20 feet. We drifted along using basically a drop shot rig with the hook on a 12 inch length of line coming away from the main line, and the 1/4 oz weight about 18 inches below that. We used dead and live smelt we caught in the harbor for bait. Not only did we nose hook the bait to make it look alive as we moved along, we started using a smaller "stinger hook" at the smelt's tail because of short strikes. We caught several keepers and lots of shorts. Also the bothersome lizardfish were a pain in the butt, but they seemed to be in deeper water.
