So, finally got too cross mammoth lakes off my bucket list for beautiful places I wanted to tube on. I got skunked as I wasnt really trying terribly hard to catch man. I hardly got any pics either as I was in awe of... Just the beautiful scenery man. I found that elusive inner peace whilst tubing in that frigid alpine scenery

I have never float tube fished there; but always wanted to, and so it is still on my bucket list!
Kudos to you for checking another fishing spot off your list!

The scenery there is beautiful, thank you for sharing!

The Mammoth/Eastern Sierras area are a favorite of mine, even if the catching is poor.  To me, even when not tubing, just being up there is nice and relaxing.
I know all the places you've shown and fished all of them many times.
A few other decent lakes to tube - Lake Mary and further north, Lundy, Trumball, June, Gull Lake and Silver Lakes[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Lake Mary early season

Gull Lake late October

Top pic is Silver Lake

If you have 4WD, then just outside of Mammoth, Laurel Lakes - tube the large lake early am - usually pre-9:00 am before the breeze picks up.  Goldens up there, as well as some rainbows and small cuts.
Gotta have 4WD to get up there, you'll never make it with 2WD and high clearance.
Just a tad below 10000 feet up, it's another very peaceful lake to tube.

Another favorite spot of mine is the Upper Owens River Valley.  It starts just below Big Springs campground and goes all the way to the upper end of Lake Crowley.  It's wide open sage/grass/cattle country.  CA Trout & Trout Unlimited worked with local ranchers years ago to fence off the river because the cattle were ruining it.  Since then, it's been a favorite of mine to hit. No float tubing on it, way too small/shallow, but very peaceful.
In the spring, when everything is green, it's breath-taking.  I took my dad up there for the first time in 2010.  He wanted to know where the trees are, this is boring.  After two hours of fishing, we headed back to the truck.  "I know why you like it out here; it's just so peaceful."  Amen, Pop, amen.[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

It's unbelievable up there, soo many different places to go, drive right up to a lake or up to a 2 mile hike. If it's too windy you fish the creeks.
I'll be up there late May for a few weeks then heading up to Metolius River, Ore., another magical forest.

Not sure when I can get back up there (Mammoth), but can't wait. The Metolius River looks cool, as well.

I lived in Grants Pass, Oregon for 13 years on the Rogue River and never heard of the Metolius River.
Where is it located next to or close to??

Hi Dan, The Metolius is on the east side of the mountain range from you, about 40 miles N of Bend, off the Deschutes. It's a spring fed river that's 56 degs. year around, all natural trout including some bull trout. All this equals to trout that are very smart, fly fish only on this river, not your stockers. Tubes don't work on this river. Many other lakes for tubes & wading rivers in beautiful pine forests!
Well worth the trip if you have the time, but as most freshwater fishing it's the experience not catching the numbers as saltwater.
