Fishing pole and tackle selection help

I'm buying a sea eagle 285 with motor and some extras including battery at the end of the month. So I have a low budget for fishing supplies. I am a strait up rookie on fishing. The main spot I will be in this summer is known for crappie. So the question is what would you recommend for a pole, lures ect. focusing the pursuit of crappie?

Welcome to the board.  I saw that you were from Western NY.  Do you know anyone with fly fishing gear?  I'd snag a setup from them for a little while and have fun with that (any local fly shop could point you in the direction of flies that work.) Trade that person some time in your SeaEagle... so you can also get some fishing intel from them, too!  

If you don't know anyone with any gear to borrow and you need to buy stuff, then grab an ultralight spinning setup, some crappie jigs and some refreshments and go have a good time!  Not sure if the big box stores would be a good place to buy. Second tier Bass Pro Shops or Cabelas is an option but reputable local tackle stores should have good knowledge of what you need (and it's always nice to support local.)



p.s.  The 285fpb is pretty cool.  I was looking at one before I got my pontoon.  It really shines with a motor. I would have ended up with one but I wanted the option of kicking with fins for positioning. If you don't mind, post up our impressions of it after you take it out.

As much as I hate to say it Walmart will be a good spot for your low budget crappie gear. I'd get yourself a couple UL rods and reels there with some 2 or 4 lbs fluorocarbon line unless the lake water is green or dirty and will stain your line then just go with monofilament line. As far as lures tube jigs, trout magnets, Berkley trout worms, power nymphs and gulp crickets all work. You might even catch an occasional trout or small bass if the lake has them as well. Also if they have them you can use those little Berkley crappie magnets as scent/attractant just one on the hook will do it.

personal opionion its not cheap but. g.loomis makes amazing crappie rods 4"-6" and pair with a stradic ci4+ and damn son youre set! like using a 1000 is amazing. i've spoke with people that love it as the best crappie set up EVER!!!! use it for crappie and blue gill and redear. so thats just me.
