Hey guys,
Just finished reading the posts regarding the earthquake Monday and thought I would relate this story.
When I was in my teens (about a million and a half years ago ) I recall experiencing a rather severe earthquake while fishing from shore at Crowley. (sometime during the early seventies?) It was midmorning and the bite was hot and heavy in the Hilton Bay on the spit. When the quake struck it knocked everyone on their asses and we all watched in awe as rocks, snow, and debris created an unbelievable spectacle and dust cloud on the other side of 395 on the face of the mountains. A gigantic cloud of dust rose out of the Convict Lake basin and we thought the worst for those fishing and camping there.
Aside from the awesome sight on the mountainside, the lake itself suddenly generated a 3'-4' chop that started pounding the shore. Many rods, lawn chairs and tackle boxes were swamped or dashed against the shore mercilessly for 3-5 minutes. The water began to literally boil as the quake shook loose gas pockets from the bottom and there was a horrendous stench that rose from the water. The water color turned from pale green, (clear to 4') to dark brown and black and zero visibility. Every bird took to flight and we saw many snakes, lizards, mice and chipmunks running about frantically. You could hear the cattle from across the pastures balling in distress. (as well as a few of the humans). To my knowledge, (and failing memory ) there were no fatalities and few injuries, But It stands out in my memory as one of the most incredible experiences of my life.
