I have been fishing with big baits for a long time now. I used a MH rod with big 4 ounce baits. It REALLY puts a strain on the rod and Yourself. I finally invested in a nice swimbait rod and I am never going back. There is a reason why they make swimbait rods for the big swimbaits. It's not a cheap area to get into but, its a lot of fun. and addicting. i use a phenix 790H Ultra swimbait rod. rated 2-8 ounce. paired with a lexa 300 and 30lb izorline MONO. i havent ever lost a fish on straight mono. Don't use braid because if you backlash on a cast, you have a large chance of the braid Snapping. my friend lost 3 rats in one weekend because of that. (80 lb. powerpro).
my rod is $270
reel was $150
line isn't really a cost but $15 for a spool??
for starter swimbaits, the line through savage gear swimbaits are awesome. they have been catching big fish lately.
some good ones to get are
Huddleston 8" $30
huddleston 6" $16
huddleston 68 $25
huddleston shad $6
Spro bbz-1 8" and 6"
Lunker punker 8" and 6"
wood or g2 work fine
plastic ones range from $15-$30
wood range from $40-60
rats are a must. i can get you a good deal on a rat. (most cost 60 up) but i can get you one for $45. but in stores they range from $60-200
Ms Slammers $35-$75 are good
river2sea s-waver $15-$20
depending on your budget there are a lot of great baits.
there are so many different catagories in this swimbait type of fishing.
what is your total budget for rod, reel, line, and baits? i'll do some research and make a match for you. I hope this kind of helped. the bigger baits are more expensive but you can run into some awesome fish
there are good rods for swimbaits that can range from $80-150.
but i can't start making a list without a budget :p
