Here's a photo of the mount Jimmy Lawrence made of an incredible trophy Bluegill that was almost 15 inches long!  The fish was caught from a farm pond in Page County Iowa, on a chartreuse spinnerbait, while the guy was bass fishing.  (So many of these giant BGs and REs are caught accidentally, while the fisherman is trying to catch bass..)   Catching a Bluegill this big is like hooking and landing a 20 pound Largemouth..

That is phenomenal!
It surprises me when a BlueGill hits my crank or stickbaits. I wonder what they are thinking.
I've never had a BG hit a spinnerbait tho.

Thanks for sharing.

What those big Bluegills are thinking is "time to eat!" I've caught lots of the larger sized BGs at Perris on smaller bass lures that resemble shad or minnows. When these panfish get larger, their diet starts to include small fish. Many times while at Perris, when we find a large school of small shad, the crappie and big Bluegill will be there also, feeding on the baitfish. When I would keep a bunch of BGs for a fish fry, as I filleted them, I would check their stomachs, and many of the largest ones were full of small shad.
