Coast Guard Station Newport was good today

May 21st in Newport was going off I have never seen so many achored boats in the harbor fishing. Not the little skiffs but big boats fishing in the harbor. I managed 8 fish total a few dinks and a few decent fish as well. I landed my very first Cuda, and I hooked a big what had to be a halibut. It took me around a boat line and sawed me off what a bummer. I have not heard my reel scream like that in quite a while. Here are some of the catches I had.

When you land those cuda's from the tube is that how you grab them? No net?
Cause those things leave a slime.

Thats how i grabed them because i did not have a net. And i am still trying to get the slime off my hands.

Good going! Rumor has it that there are some red crab in the vicinity. Buuuuutttt....maybe the projected grunion runs have them going nuts?

No net!? Jaded didn't have a net on the water this morning! After many a lost fish right in front of the tube I stopped that practice.

Hell yeah Jeff...NPH is always good.....holds lots of fishies.....and sucks about the one that got away......always next time....makes u keep coming back

Also about the anchoring part.....u cant....from what I understand it's illegal with in the harbor...outside champion......

I know it was wierd so they were not anchored but they were tied off in the harbor. Some were drifting but a few were tied off is was weird and very busy. But if it 5 was about the grunion it makes sense.

I haven't caught a barrie yet ... but it's still on my bucket list to do.

How large is the net's recommended diameter by members and what style of net is recommended ... not wanting to damage the fish prior to CPR.
I normally use a Bogga-Grip for lip grippin' ... the larger, toothier models.

Thanks SP Dan you know i don't have any info on length of the net as i have never used one. But there are better choices for net material when it come to protecting yhe fish. I think we need to make this a discussion it is an important topic.
