Looks like a super session! Great report!

In that last fish, the checks are faint, but looks like a normal variation in appearance to me.

According to the California Sport Fish Identification Guide from the DFW, one of the defining characteristics for Kelp (Calico) Bass is that the dorsal fin peaks with the 3rd and 4th spines being the longest and the same length. In the Rockfish, the dorsal tends to be more rounded with the 3rd spine being shorter and leading up to the 4th.

However, I think the nail in the coffin for it being any sort of Rockfish is this:

"Rockfish have spines on the operculum (cheek) which are not present on kelp bass."

The pictures in the main guide are exceptionally bad, but once you have the scientific name, you can usually Google up better pictures. The written descriptions usually point out defining characteristics, and you can always search for other guides than the DFW.

Just my centavos....

So the 3rd and 4th dorsal spines appear to be the longest and the same length in my photo.
Kelp Bass.

Thanx Bob

That works for me.
