Here's a good book on lure colors: "What Fish See: Understanding optics and color shifts for designing lures and flies" by Colin J. Kageyama

This is one of the best and simplest analysis of lure color science that I have seen. Thanx for posting it. After years of my own struggles to figure this out here are the few things I know and trust about color selection.
1) for the most part it's how it swims that is more important than how it looks
2) lure color is meant to catch fisherman first, fish second
3) match the hatch, ( size, shape, action, and then color) still the most consistent policy
4) no matter what the color if you fish it with confidence it will catch!

my humble opinion thnx bodfish

I firmly believe in each of your points but #4 is to me the most valuable for me and my experience. So, so true.

Thanks for looking.

Root Beer rocks for sure! I also have been using a lot of the "Camo" in mullet and shads. "New Penny" that's a goodin too!

Ultimate favorite color for me especially for surf fishing is "Motor Oil" hard to find in the 4" mullet Berkely. Big Hammer motor oil with the various flake colors is great but I only find them in the 1" perch killers.
